    Hi,

I've been trying to find a stove to go with my sea swing. I have a Optimus 45 but its burner is neither of a silent type nor with a valve. If I could get a silent burner and a taller riser pipe then I could use it. However, I've been having trouble finding these parts and began to wonder if there are any new stoves that could be adapted. Specifically, I was looking at the Butterfly #2412 Brass Pressure stove (http://www.stpaulmercantile.com/index.php?action=store&item=BrassPressureStove) Could this stove be made to work with my Sea Swing?

    Thanks!

    Christine

P.S. I plan on using this stove in my sailboat so all I care about is having a functional kerosene gimbled stove. Originality is not that important.

Hi Christine before we could provide information, would it be possible to post a picture of the sea swing gimbal you are referring to as there are variances. As for the 45 silent, it sometimes pops up on ebay but normally as a kitchen stove which means that the riser tube is much shorter than that for the sea swing riser tube. I do not own a 45 although I have seen one about a month ago (brand new) attached to a sea swing at a particular store so I do have an idea.

Someone will be along shortly with a more positive response.

    Best regards.

    Ron

    Hi Christine,

    1. The Optimus 45 is a classic stove and probably better made than most of today's offerings. If the main components check out as OK, and the washers and gaskets are replaced, it should be good for another 50 or so years.

    1. A regulated silent burner is the preferred option for a sea-swing application. These are not cheap. They do appear occasionaly on Ebay and there is a Swedish seller auctioning suitable New Old Stock optimus burners here:

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VINTAGE-OPTIM...433581331&po=&ps=63&clkid=6266695283098912933

Alternatively, Base Camp is taking orders for new regulated burners:

    http://www.base-camp.co.uk/exploded views/Optimus/207 burner.htm

If you are willing to control the power level of your stove using the pump and air-release screw, you can obtain a NOS suitable silent burner here:

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PRIMUS-No5-BU...arden_Hearing_Cooling_Air&hash=item415526beca

    3. You should ask Base Camp if they can supply the extended riser tube you need for your application. Alternatively you could braze in an extension piece to a standard No.45 riser tube,
Item 2011 in this spares listing:

    http://www.base-camp.co.uk/Optimus.html

Alternatively, if you have access to machining facilities, you could perhaps have a custom-made riser made. However, be aware that the stove manufacurers used non-standard, now obsolete, screw threads.

    Hope this helps.

    Best Regards,
    Kerophile.

    Hi, Christine,

Welcome to CCS! I would strongly recommend that you stick with your Optimus 45 over that Butterfly stove. My experience with the Butterfly brand of stoves is that they are cheap, in all ways, and will offer you neither reliability, or longevity, both of which your old Optimus can continue to do with a little work on your part. As has been mentioned, you can most certainly get a regulated silent burner for your 45, and if you've been using that stove already in your Sea Swing, it already has the extended riser on it, necessary for such use. I'd suggest seeking out a proper regulated silent burner, and sticking with your trusty and wonderful Optimus 45!! Best of all worlds, and you already own it! ;) 8) :D Take care, and God Bless!

    Every Good Wish,
    Doc

Here are two pictures of my Sea Swing with a tape measure. If anyone could confirm that I would need a taller riser tube, I would very much appreciate it.

    Evening, Christine,

Yep, I'm thinking that the long riser will work exactly as needed to make your 45 fit the Sea Swing perfectly. I'll try to dig mine out, and take a photo to show you what I mean. Don't give up, and have patience. All will work out very well. Take care, and God Bless!

    Every Good Wish,
    Doc

    Hi Christine,

I have an Optimus 45A that I'm trying to fix up to work on my boat as well. The distance from the base (where you're measuring from in the picture) of my Sea Swing to the crown (top) of the burner is 4-3/4". My 45A (for alcohol)burner is 3-1/4" form top to bottom and my riser extension takes up the other 1-1/2" plus a few threads. I've got a leak btw. the riser and burner tubes I have to fix up before I fire it up. I was hoping my stove was kerosene, but it's not. I might be able to live with this as long as it burns hot enough and stays lit.

If you need anymore measurements I'd be glad to pass them along.

    Ken :)
