Hi Well I've finished my first fettle, restoring an 8r. A small job for some, but as my first it was a biggie! The stove looked like this when I got it Not too bad but a real naff paint job, burner not working and a bit of tarnish on the tank. It now looks like this Its painted Ford Cosmic Blue with a few coats of lacquer as well. I'm quite chuffed with how it turned out as it was my first paint job. Big thanks to all those who gave me tips on the various problems I had during this fettle =D> I do not plan to light this for several months until the paint has really gone orf and hard. Im now doing the same with a 22 and the mystery 111.... I may have caught a bug...
Redfiat my 8r does not need any fettling or a repaint but i might just send it to you for the repaint anyway. That is one fine looking stove. WELL DONE LAD. =D> =D> =D> =D> lance
8) . A first class job - on a first class stove. As for the "bug", well, that may not be easy to cure, but it only seems to be painful in the wallet area.

I will look forward to seeing how the 22 and the mystery 111 turn out, too. Glad you've got the bug, but I have to tell you, once you've been bitten, there is NO known cure. Excellent job! I have an 8R, but it is a newer version. Someday I shall win an older one on ebay such as yours with the bakelite control knob and the embossed case.
I hope not. Im going to leave it a few months to let the paint harden lots before using it again. I think that will help ??
Has anyone tried Ford aquafoam met - - it's slightly paler than cosmos. To save the stove case a bit of agro it's worth getting a small piece of thin aluminium and making a shallow dish about 3" diameter to go under the spirrit cup.
I don't know how old the colour is but I can't ever recall seeing a Ford painted in Cosmos Blue jc Why don't you try it, it'll save me a job Must admit Cosmos is a little dark, it does lighten up after the lacquer coat though, the suggestion originally came from Ian. I went through all of Halfrauds paint and it was the closest that I could find
On a 22 I restored & use I've put a strip of metal fire resistant tape under the burner - it also prevents the burner scratching the paint when you open & close the stove. http:// Not bad for ?2 - the paint cost me more!
Hey, Ross, Outstanding suggestion for adding the fire resistant tape! How long does the tape last, before needing replacement?
