Yes If you get plain Naptha. The Amish buy Naptha in bulk and go to the local lantern shop for five gal. Coleman has some preservitives and rust inhibitors added.

Do you know in some areas of this country they have a limit on how much Coleman you can buy because of that. Some stores have taken it off the shelves. Dan
Dan, yep. It will probably come to having Coleman add some toxic additive that clogs up stoves and lanterns.
I have heard of Naphta. I want to find a cheaper alternative to CF as I cook everyday on one of my stoves.
Having done work with law enforcement agencies, I can tell you that although it's used for meth synthesis, Coleman Fuel and naptha are NOT ideal solvents for doing that, due to it's lack of purity. Now,having taken chem for several years back in college (30+ years ago!), I know WHAT is, but this is a STOVE forum. Murph
If you research Naptha it is used as a loose term describing a range of solvents with varing molecular chains. In laymans terms its a mutt not a throughbred. Dan
Never compared the two side by side but doesn't Coleman contain a blue dye (or blue-green) too? I would suppose for identification.
The Coleman fuel sold in New Zealand is as clear as water. Its just 4 times the price of bulk Naptha. A lot of bulk lubricant suppliers sell this in 20 litre tubs. Easy to buy unlike some of the substances mentioned in that other forum
w_f: If you can get naptha that is cheaper than Coleman fuel, I would at least pick some up and give it a test run. It should work fine. You might look up the material safety data sheet for that particular brand just to see what might be in it besides petroleum distillates.
Here, in the Motherland ( ), naptha is available as panel wipe...the chap who repairs your car paintwork uses it to clean the surface before the next application. They use loads of it, even with water based paints. I get my cooker fuel frommy panel beater and sprayer - 5 litres (just over a big gallon) is about £15.00, or it was...that is about $25 a US gallon. Bear in mind that we pay over the odds for any petrol/gas/fuel based products. How would you like to run your V8 Chevy SUV on gas at $12 per gallon? That is what we are paying at the pumps over here...and you always wondered why we drive small cars! They are talking of it going up to nearly $15 per gallon by school summer holidays. People are really thinking about where they take their car now. It is getting extortionate. LONG LIVE THE MOTORCYCLE at 50 miles per gallon.
We're pretty spoiled here in the US. Coleman fuel can be had for $9.75 total per gallon and unleaded 87 octane automotive gasoline for $3.93 total per gallon. I tend to think of Coleman fuel as a bit pricey compared to automotive gasoline -- until I start comparing it to the standard threaded gas canisters for backpacking. 110g of canister gas is $5.48. The equivalent in Coleman fuel? $0.37. When people say "dude! click, click woosh*" while I'm priming my liquid fuel stove, I just smile and say "pennies to your (five) dollars". I saw a potentially ominous sign today: I was in Walmart to buy a gallon of Coleman Fuel. They had none, however, they did have quarts at $6.00 each.... Hopefully, this isn't Coleman's way of paying corporate bonuses this year... Paul
For the past year or so I've been surfing Craigslist for Coleman Fuel, aka "White Fuel", "White Gas", "Camp Fuel", "Wal-Mart Stove Fuel", and "Blaze-o". I now have twenty three unopened gallon tins, and seventeen partials in the back shed. I scored two cases (12 gal.) of "Marine Stove Fuel" aka denatured alcohol for $10 a few weeks ago. So with the thirty gallons of kerosene, I now have enough fuel for my various stoves to last approximately a hundred and seventeen years. I've also rat-holed enough spares to keep all but the most arcane of my stoves running well into the 23d Century given available fuel. I also have a good supply of mantles and generators for my various pressure lamps and lanterns, those need care and feeding too. As soon as we have some acceptable weather, I'll consolidate all the partial tins of coleman type fuel and bin the empties. That should free up some shelving in the Shed Mahal. Gerry
You are paying too much for your naptha. Get some Aspen 4 it should be just a tad over £12/5 litres. Like Henry I like my Landrover...and I get 40 mpg out of mine!
