Finding mesh that small may be a problem. As for redspeeder's idea - interesting, it comes back to my original thoughts of horizontal slots, which I think someone else also mentioned. But making a washer stack? Could have possibilities . (This is all getting to much for my poor aching brain).
these slotted caps remind me of a British Mil. no. 6 stove burner head does anyone have one they could post measurements of? maybe that would help I really like the idea of slotted caps, if nothing else just for the novelty of flame pattern =)
I've experimented with mesh when trying for a silent for the 123R burner. A good source for fine stainless mesh can be found in the kithcen utensils department of many stores. I'm speaking of tea-leaf holders (don't know the proper english name for it) I bought packs of this kind at IKEA.
The No. 6 is what got me to start this thread. The are dimensions of several slotted cap designs on page 2.
If sawing thin slots with a hacksaw is difficult, how about making horizontal slots in a lathe? I'm thinking, make an outer cap, braze three small rods vertically to the inside of it, then turn it, cutting slits through the cap. The rods should hold the resulting "rings" in place. Would this work?
I mentioned earlier that I would try the little brass midi slit cap on a stove using white gas (Coleman fuel). As promised, here it is on a Primus OmniFuel using that fuel. Sorry about the plethora of pictures, but the group of shots together shows the full range. The high flame shots show that the flame was really breaking up and also air deficient (rich). The simmer shot is as low as it would go without collapsing into underburn. All in all, I felt that it handled the enormous power of the OmniFuel pretty well.
As for mesh, I have used the permamant gold coffee filters sometimes found in thrift store coffee makers. I currently cut them to size with a dremel and roll the squares into the fuel feed tube for my 111Tango stoves. The mesh averages about a 0.010" wire and a hole not larger then 0.010", still smaller than the Optimus OEM mesh. Just wash them off with oven cleaner before installing. These mught be plentiful enough for use in your burner idea.
It could be done, but I'm thinking it would be very fiddly. The bars might also affect the fuel/air flow within the cap if they were too thick. The source for finding mesh is great, shows what a bit of lateral thinking can do! Gary, that burner looks like it really hums along nicely . As for using horizontal slits, would they need to be continuous? I'm thinking three slits, cut in the same plane around the circumference but not continuous, with maybe a second row overlapping where the other slits stop. It shouldn't be hard to cut these with a hacksaw.
Well, I thought I would take a stab at the slotted silent cap thing that you all are having so much fun with. I used a dremel tool with a 0.75 mm cutting disc on a cross-slide vise to work the piece through in a straight line. What I have appears to work quite well. I made sure that it would burn properly so I let it flame for about 10 minutes. Other burner caps I've made would start to turn yellow after about a minute and to liquid all because the thermal feedback wasn't working. I left it on simmer for a thermal feedback test and that worked quite well. I eyed all the dimensions so I don't have any of my measurements so I would have to go back out to the garage and make them. But then you might not want them anyway. I made the cap a little too tall for the stove but even with that it still works very good. Here's the burner cap with slots. The burner cap is simmering here. Works unbelievably well. Top view of the flame process. Under a kettle. Opened up a bit. Simmer again. Works so well. Here's a picture of it in front of my slot cutting setup. Another shot. Nice flames. Blue flames in front of my setup again. The slot cutting part of this went pretty quickly. I think it was about 30 minutes max. So, silent burner caps with slots may make them easier and shorter time to make. It still takes a bit to do all of the other tasks when making a burner cap, but when you are done, your noisy stove becomes quiet. Well, it's late for me. sam

Hey! I don't work for or endorse anything Simplot! I don't think I've eaten any of their products for quite some time - that I know of. I'm not sure I could stamp a potato onto a cap. It would probably look like something a dawg left behind! sam
