Part of the problem could be over filling the tank. there needs to be a good sized air pocket on top of the fuel to build up pressure. I'd start with half full or a bit over until you get the swing of it. The 71 family are great stoves, generally they chuck out heat like there was a prize for it.

Please don't run it dry, the cotton wick that sucks up the fuel gets toasted and wont carry the fuel as well. Possibly this could have happened before you got it. The good news is they are readily replaceable, all you need is a string from a pure cotton mop. There are any number of posts about how to change it here, and it'll give you a solid insight on the how's and why's of your (neat!) lil stove.

This photo posting is not easy, I drove my daughter mad last night trying to post them.
Bit of a laugh, I reminded her of when she expected me to do things for her straight away with no concern for degree of difficulty.

    Thanks again for everyones advice.

when you click reply you get this window Im typeing in. Below it id a dialog box called file attachments. Click on "upload images or files" and you get a browse option to find the pic on your pc and upload it. It must be under 100k before you start so crop and resize the picture before you start.

I see you've sorted the pics, good man.

One thing to remember, when you run it don't leave the key on the spindle, it gets very hot.

I tried to start the 71 again this morning, but it won't go. There is preasure build up in the tank a small amount of flame at the jet but that is it. I think I'll have to change the wick and see if there is a blockage before the on /of valve.

I've had a bit of time today to play around with the 71. Firstly I stripped it down again,Ipulled the wick out of the valve body and sure enough there was black soot all around the top end. So I cleaned this out, then remove the adjuster valve and jet and scraped out all areas blew it through and re assembled the unit. It's running really well now couldn't be happier, starts quick, nice even flame.

Excellent. Now where are those flame shots? I mean what's the point of having children if they can't help you with your computer. ;)

I'll get one up shortly, the child doesn't live that close to me. But I'm sure the grand kids will need minding again shortly.
