This unused 2 pint roarer stove was made in November 1956 for the MOD It is unusual for several reasons. The first oddity is that the rising tube stays in position when the stove is dismantled. The reserve lid fits in the top of the rising tube. I would have thought that this would have caused frequent replacement of the burner washers. The next oddity is that the burner is an excessive size. The flame ring on the left is from the C11. The flame ring on the right is from a normal 2 pint stove. The biggest surprise is that that the nipple is a standard 0.32mm nipple as fitted to most 1 or 2 pint paraffin stoves. Despite the burner size it only produces the same amount of heat as a 1 pint stove but spreads the heat over a much bigger area. I am not certain whether it is a mistake but my stove did not have a windshield. If this is correct the stove must only have been intended for use indoors or in a tent Regards Bryan
I too have the same stove, and it does not come with a wind-shield.So, to make my own then. Easy peasy. Take 1 baked bean tin, take off the top and bottom, cut a slot in the side to enable you to light it. Voila! 1 Free wind-shield. Rightly or wrongly, it works for me and the tin is the perfect height falling just short of the flame spreader. P.S. These stoves are still available new old military stock, 55years after manufacture, and with Kerophiles excellent washers, run perfect.
The stoves are interesting from the technical point of view. However the packaging and marketing of them is also interesting. The label is a civilian label and the cardboard box does not have a stencilled broad arrow on it. It does have a hand written 1 56 separated by a hand printed arrow head. The MOD gear that I have seen recently is in plain cardboard boxes. It is possible that some of the stoves were made for but never bought by the MOD. The stove must have been made in huge numbers because at least 3 retailers currently sell the stoves. None of them habitually sell military surplus suggesting that they may be buying them from a non military wholesaler All of those that I have seen are dated 11 56 Regards Bryan
