I know it's not a stove, I was going to post it on 'the other forum' but I don't feel so at home there as I do here on CCS This came through the post the other day. Ain't she beautiful Set about fettling it, well when I say fettle, I did little more than give it a good wipe over. Polished up the reflector, changed all the seals etc, soaked the pump cup, filled her up and voila, lit first time I showed it to her indoors, she said "ooh that's nice" what is she trying to do, get in my good books. "Marvellous nick" says I, "still in it's original livery, someone must have kept it somewhere safe". "Maybe it was on top of the piano" says young James. Cheers son, I owe you one. "Don't even think about it sunshine " was her curt reply. Now I need to find somewhere to hang it
Henry, I think it would look right smashing on top of the sideboard in front of my desk at home. lance
HENRY . It's people like you that are going to damage my wallet, showing things like that, I think I'm getting an interest in lamps now.
Very nice Henry ! For the unknowledgeable among us on these things, could you provide a few more details - I reckon you've been begging for someone to ask Cheers Keith
It's a Tilley AL8 It was used for track and rolling stock inspections on railways, at night presumably There is another very similar that has a tilting reflector so that inspections on tunnel roofs can be carried out. It's a more or less standard Tilley lamp clamped to a frame with a large footprint, wooden handle on top, so that it can be easily carried and set down on the track and still be stable. The reflector is the same as found on R1 radiators and the like. I found a place for it hanging from the corner of a shelf in the dining room. SWMBO didn't have a fit when she saw it so......
I particularly like the angled deflector to keep the heat off the hand. An initial thought was why didn't they fit it at the back, but the lamp wouldn't balance properly presumably. My late grandfather used to work on the Great Central Railway at Rothley ( if you go to the preserved railway he is actually on several of the postcards ), so probably would have used something like this, as he was a freight inspector and shunter when he moved to Leicester. Definitely not one for the garage, glad you found a suitable place for proper display ! Cheers Keith
I don't know if it matters much but I did the same thing with my R1. I put the burner head off a lamp on it, thing was it took me forever and a small fortune getting that damn Tilley Onion glass for it. I will see if I can post a pic soon. Rob
Looks good! I'm rebuilding a Coleman 480 HOT RAY Heater thats based on the Quick Lite Series Lamps. I have to make the burner myself since the original ceramic ones are hard to find.
