Hi, I'm new to this forum. I'm looking at buying a Coleman 6F stove and there seems to be a problem with the filler plug. It turns but does not want to come out. I assume it's threaded and the threads are stripped. Is it threaded? What might it take to fix it? How difficult and expensive might it be to find a replacement tank? Would a newer tank, or pretty much any other Coleman stove tank, work with this stove so that it'll be functional? Thanks, Kurt
Welcome to the forum sgtlethargic, when you turn the filler cap counter clockwise did you notice whether the cap rises a bit? Does it stop or resist at some point or just turns but does not come out? The tank is similar to a coleman 425 if ever you need to finf a replacement from a donor stove. Pictures would help. Ron
when you are turning the outer part of the cap see if the inner part is turning if not it is prob rusted it will come out take the center screw out and remove outer ring use pliers to rock the center part of the cap out
You are probably right, threads are stripped. If you are lucky it is the cap (brass) rather than the threads on the tank. I think you have a good chance of getting this running, with a little luck and looking around. The more modern tanks are not as nice as those older ones but they are easy to find if you have to go that route. But save the old tank. The caps on these old stove have 3 parts (cap, plug and screw) plus a washer in the plug. Sometimes that washer is well stuck to the tank, try to remove the screw and see if you can ease the cap off.
Thanks for the welcoming and it's nice to have such a quick response! I didn't look that closely at what was going on when trying to unscrew the filler plug. We did try pulling while turning the plug. There was a scraping noise that sounded like it was deep inside the tank. Did somebody say "pictures"? What do you think? Is that grill original? The asking price is $20. I'm thinking it's a pretty good deal. I'm glad to hear I can use a 425 tank, which I happen to have. OK, not a cap like I was thinking of. Ignore what I said. Still looks like a nice stove -- that grate may not be original but I am clearly not a good source.
I have a suggestion as to what may be happening. I have a Coleman 523, two burner military medical / vehicular stove with a cylindrical tank, similar to yours. The filler cap was stuck, and with considerable effort it started to move. Unfortunately, it was moving WITH the threaded bushing / ferrel. I'm not sure if this connector is press fit into the tank or soldered or both, but it gave way before the stuck top. I think I can see the connector / bushing in your photo of the end to the tank. Turn the cap, and see if the female part it threads into moves also. Other folks may have some suggestions about fixing the problem. Good luck. Paul
Okay, I bought it. In turning the filler plug, whatever is under it is turning with it. It looks like a washer, but it could be the threaded insert.
The washer-looking part is the same diameter (or slightly smaller) as the filler plug (A). The feature at B is not turning.
