I have a Coleman Model 425B, two-burner white gas stove. I am trying to resurrect it after years of non-use. Unless I use pliers on the cap to get it really tight, the cap leaks some. I am 90% sure it never had an O-ring under the cap, just metal-to-metal. How do I solve the leaking problem?
Hi vkramsey, welcome to the forum. If your tank cap is the older 3 piece type(cap, gasket flange, screw) you can fit it with a nitrile "O" ring, but the easiest fix would be to buy a replacement cap at a sporting goods store, walmart, Kmart, etc. All the Best, Jim Walter
HI VK i have a couple of 425's. The caps are expensive to replace. Just go to hardware store and get the rubber washer that fits the cap. bring cap with you and you will find the right one in the hardware or pluming section. in Canada they are like 30 cents at Home Depot. If the old washer is still in the cap use pliers to hold the cap and take your torch and burn out the rubber gasket. It should just disintegrate. Next i like to use a small piece of sandpaper and scrub where the new washer will sit in case any of the washer is left. important tip Make sure when you buy the washer it fits tight to the inside bulge of the cap as this is where the contact actually happens, the washer should stretch a little as you push it over this bump. The outer edge of the washer is not as important and over time the washer will flatten out and fill the entire area but make sure the inside is tight, if it goes in too easy or fall out when you turn it over you have the wrong washer. also make sure the washer is not too thick, typically the thickness of a penny or less. Good Luck BTM
Or, you could Google "Old Coleman Parts". This website has anything you might need, and at a reasonable price. I know the owner (Mike), and he is fair and helpful. Give him a try!
