I am posting these pictures on vanklinken's behalf. Richard has done a great job at cleaning up this 1930's Primus 71. The stove is missing its key and is borrowing a Radius 42 key. The stove isn't marked with a date stamp but I would guess is around 1937 was the year it was built. Some before pictures. The end result is a great little stove! All the stove needs now are the two labels and it is good as new! Great work Richard I hope to see the flame shots too. Cheers, Jeff
Hi jeff a superb restoration by Richard, this model was made between the 1930's too 1955 i have two of these 71's and they allso dont have a date stamp which is a shame. and i agree with you Jeff they are a great little stove and for there size have plenty of power well done Jeff and Richard for brining a great stove a new lease of life
Hello Brian, Thank you. The age can be narrowed down somewhat I believe by the filler cap. It is a shame that the date stamps are not on these stoves. It is hard to date something based on parts that can be switched out over time. I forgot to mention that Richard is looking for a key for this stove. A early Primus 71 key. Cheers, Jeff
Many thanks for all of the very constructive remarks. Being my very first refurbishment project, the 71 is special to me. I will definitely keep it. I am still seeking an appropriate key and would be both very grateful and willing to pay for a suitable replacement. I have carried out a flame shot in the dark and again would be grateful for any comments on the result.
Hi Ari, I had a great tip from a fellow countryman of yours, acme auctions. He told me to use a product called Simichrome polish. It can be bought on the net. I first used vinegar and very fine wire wool to remove the dirt and grime, all very therapeutic I might add. I hope that has helped your enquiry. vanklinken
There is another product that might be easier. Maybe you have heard of it, it is called Flitz. I have used their Flitz Polish -Liquid and I have had really amazing results with it.
Great work!! Looks beautiful!! Flitz and Maas are excellent products for polishing. I haven't tried Simichrome. Yet.... Mike
Richard passed on some flame shots to me. Below the perfect simmer Full throttle 8) I don't know about you guys but I think this stove is well ready for the Ref. Gallery. Cheers, Jeff
Once again Jeff, thank you so very much for the help and encouragement you have given me. I am well pleased with my first fettle, it will always be a 'special' for me. Let's hope that the Primus 70 I am currently fettling turns out OK. I am having trouble taking the burner from the tank, any suggestions please?
Post Scriptum: I received the decals for the 71 today from Bill McCall in the USA. What a great job he has made of them. I will apply them to the 71 case when it has had its final fettle. Let's hope I apply them in the correct manner...............
Your welcome. It really was nothing. Once you figure out how to reduce pictures, upload and add to the post it is easy. Took me a while. I think I have the hang of it. As to the Primus 70. That can be tricky. I would soak the joint in some kind of penetrating oil. And use a flare-nut wrench. This is where I like to call a friend or vise in. With the wrench in the vise turn the tank/font. That said I have never removed a riser from a Primus 70. I believe it can be removed. Have you looked at the wick from the filler cap opening? It might be fine and you can skip this dangerous step. Cheers, Jeff
Yup Bill does great work. What kind of decal did you get? The peel and stick or the water transfer? Either way I am sure it will turn out great. Jeff
Good job Jeff, I have a 71, in the blue tin that needs a very good fettle. I hope I can get it to come out as good as yours.I would be willing to trade at this point. Best Regard's, God Bless
Thank you Duane. I wish the stove was mine. Richard did a great job all I did was add the pictures. Nice bike in your avatar by the way. Harley Davidson Road Glide? Jeff
