Hi all, I picked up a Primus 71L off of Ebay and i sure could use a little help. The stove is in great shape except the valve is directly over the fill cap.My question is: can I move the valve without causing a leak? Is there a washer between stem and tank? I looked on the exploded diagrams here on the site but didn't see any washer/seal.I need to rotate the valve away from the fill just a few degrees. I'd put up a picture but me and my new digital camera aren't speaking right now.(dang thing is smarter than I am!) Thanks for any info Steve (Bajabum)
So you are the guy that was after it i drop out going to hi for me I cant help but someone else on here can
PTFE tape might just be enough to stop the valve reaching the filler cap when tightened. Isn't the thread tapered on the 71? If so, then perhaps you can GENTLY overtighten it enough to clear the filler. Or would this be considered bad practice?

Hi, If you haven't already come across this thread there is a host of good info. re: the #71 stoves, .. complete with pictures. Spudz
First I would completely unscrew the stem from the tank (using an oil filter strapwrench for the tank, maybe after heating the - empty - tank), then clean all threads thoroughly and oil them lightly, and finally screw the stem back in untill truly tight. These stems are spherical and thus selflocking when screwed in far enough. Cleaning and oiling the threads will help screwing in, so that - hopefully - the valve will end up somewhere else than above the filling cap. Don't try just screwing further in without cleaning and oiling first, because the stem may be stuck too hard for that - you might end up with a broken stem and/or stripped threads. Good luck, Jur
Why did they stop making this useful and lovely stoves? I do not enjoy the new stoves as Nova and MSR. Yes they burn nice, hot, blue and almost anything, but there is the fuelbottle and the hose. A stove shal have its own tank. Prefferably in the bottom of the stove. As a 111user for many years I have now seen the buty and simplicity in the 123. Rune
Welcome to the Brass Side, your transformation is complete I view stoves with much the same line of thinking as the excellent Seagull outboards I enjoyed in my youth: If it isnt fitted, it wont go wrong.
Thanks! I guess i've been a "stovie" for a while and didn't know it. sure sneaks up on you!. I started out with a Esbit, then got one of those "swedish" army kits, then I got serious with a new 111C,an old 45, an ancient 00,and now a gorgous 71L. I,ve got an old 45 tank someone removed the legs from.I got houshold style legs from A&H,gonna make a optimus 45 household !
