1988 Whisperlite. I haven't used it in a few years due to the broken generator tube. I'm sending it to MSR on Monday. For $20.00 they'll replace the tube and ship it back.

Nice older model. I have one just like it.

What's wrong with the generator? I can't tell from the photo.

Crack in the tube in the cup area right where it goes through the hole down to the priming cup.

    Really? Did not know that.
I replaced the leather gasket about 16 years ago.
    Never gave me trouble.

    Dave,

I've got several of those gray pumps. They're not as good as the older yellow pumps, nor are they as good as the current Duraseal pump, but I wouldn't call them a fire hazard. I had one fail due to a cracked "O" ring, but that was my fault for not replacing the "O" ring.

I wonder if they realize he has a pre-shaker jet model?

    Bjork,

You might want to clarify with MSR that you have a pre-shaker jet Whisperlite. Your Whisperlite is an older model that has a jet shaped like a golf tee. You model simmers relatively well compared to the current shaker jet. If they replace the line, they may have to make mods to the stove which would diminish the ability to simmer. Maybe you aren't concerned about this. For me, I would ask.

Isn't that nice? I like the old "Matterhorn" logo. If this stuff sack is like mine, it has multiple pockets inside. The stuff sacks that came after this were pretty cheap.

MSR featured a few mountain peaks as their logo, didn't they? Wasn't the first one Mt. Rainier? Then it seems the Matterhorn came next, and then the two-peak version where one peak is larger than the other and presented as basically two triangles, some were multiple sets of double triangles. Currently it's the two-peak and sleek version.

Got my repair back and it appears that they just gave me a whole new stove! All I paid for was one way postage.($20.00usd) Thanks MSR!

*I guess I'll have to spring for a new pump and fuel bottle:)

    Hi, bkork2,

Congrats on getting your WPL all fixed up! MSR is a most outstanding companies in many ways, not the least is stellar customer service! It really doesn't get any better than what MSR offer their customers, both old and new. By the way, that black and grey pump is actually a good one, but it IS possible to snap off the little tabs that hold the pump rod in the pump, if you're not careful. It will still work, even after you've done that, but not as well, and it's very easy to begin to lose the small half pieces that shim the pump rod, once the tabs are broken off. But, with care, that old black and grey pump can still give lots of faithful service. The newest pump is the best that MSR have ever offered, however, and quite durable.

DSK, what did you ever decide to do about your old WPL? I will be very happy to help you with your stove, and will give MSR a call for you, if that would help. Please remind me of what your problem was. I'm thinking it was the rubber fuel line, right? In any case, please let me know, and let's work it out together with MSR. I think they will definitely help you, as they helped bjork2, me, and multitudes of other happy MSR customers! Send me an email, DSK, and let's make it happen.

As to the red stuff sack, yep, I have one of those, too. I had Sweet Bride shorten it just a tad, and have long used it, because of it's many pockets inside, to carry my first Optimus 00! Works a treat! I also cut down the Optimus wrench, and drilled some holes in it, so it's a little lighter, and still works just fine. I just tried to find it for a photo, but alas, it's a bit "hidden" down in the Hobbit Hole!   Take care, and God Bless!

    Every Good Wish,
    Doc

You just reminded me that years ago I did just that. Forgot all about that.
I snapped off the plastic piece on the pump.
I did fix it with a repair kit.

    Yep, happened to me.
The thing caught fire. My fault. Did not check seals
The thing sort of melted together but I'have her running again :)

Drilled 2 holes with my Dremel on the place where these tiny tabs sat and put in tiny metric bolts.
Still have to be careful though. When pumping - as always - 'turn' rod slightly to the right..

Just to be on the safe site I bought a slightly newer version - shaker type - but I left out the needle  Burns much better without it.

I think I only switch pumps when I go hiking. Better safe than sorry.. 8)
