I guess one never knows what will show up at a flea market. Here's a little alcohol stove I found while strolling through my regular Saturday market: a Glogau & Co. Alcohol Gas Stove:

I had a hard time reading the stamp, but got a clue from a quick search and pic of an advert posted by usdan50:

the stove features a little primer/fill cap combo:

    and open -

unscrewing the cap shows the wool(?) wick intact:

A quick fill and spark to prime, and almost instantly flames appeared through the burner holes:

My first attempt was to make some espresso using another ($1) flea-market find: a GSI coffee maker:

But I either filled the stove too full or the diameter of the maker reflects back too much heat, resulting in a large flames and a rather rapid boil (when a slow boil is needed):

With the fuel level reduced, I then tried a favorite Revere copper kettle (also a $1 flea-market find):

But the diameter was definitely too big, resulting in over-pressurization... finally, I tried a more appropriately sized vessel, an often-used ibrik:

....which worked just fine, even with a 3/4-full tank!

    Here's a description from a 1904 copy (public-domain) of Hardware Dealers Magazine, vol. 22:

I'm happy with my new brass-spun, nickel-plated alcohol stove - it cost $1 in 1904, but would be about $25 today (and most likely made you-know-where).

Excellent write-up of a great find.

Should be in the Stove Reference Gallery to avoid getting buried by subsequent posts here in the Stove Forum.

    Hi LA

The Glogau bears a striking resemblance to the Reform
    Image 16

There is also another variation of the Reform stove which is collapsible, with slots on the side of the tank, for the legs.

    update:

after a bit of scrubbing with a nylon brush and lemon dishwashing detergent, the stove has cleaned up nicely...

and, interestingly, now maintains a steady, even low-level burn, perfect for slow cooking and maintains this even with a big kettle!

perhaps the crud removal has helped?

i am *very* happy with this stove and am very surprised that it has survived 108 years - it was made four years before my father was born!
