ok i know its not a classic but i know some of you out there have an optimus nova or nova+ and i just had a question when you flip the bottle to turn off the stove how long does it take to stop burning and depressurize the bottle? im still having to do the old method of opening the bottle slowly and shake the fuel out of the stove
Yeah, best to get a feel for it so you don't waste fuel. On Coleman fuel, mine usually purges in about a minute or so. That way if your brewing up you can flip the bottle before your target temp is reached and be ready to go that much quicker. Mike
+1 After a while you'll be able to come pretty close to having the stove burn out just as the water boils...I always prep some water for tea after cooking my meal.
If I'm not dismantling my Nova, I just shut it off at the stove. If I'm going to take it apart, then I'll flip the bottle. Never ever had any problems.
Be careful with that jkline. Don't know which version you have, but turning these off when hot can result in a stuck spindle when cool. NOT FUN! Best to give it the flip and leave the valve open. I flip it and when it goes out, just release the quick disconnect. I have the older Brunton Nova. Your mileage may vary. Mike
Eh, ignorance is bliss. I suspect this is a myth, for as much as I've used my Nova, if this were a problem, it would have happened by now. Is it really any different when you shut your car off?
dragonflys are known to stick sometimes under the same conditions. Mines done it once. Luckily I was able to free it.
I have 5 Novas (some older and some newer) or so... I think 4 of them stick if shut off tightly and left to cool so it's not a myth. As for cars...they mostly have lubricated parts and I certainly don't run a two-stroke mix for stove fuel.
It's no myth, as it happened to me the first few times I ran mine. What you have is a tube that contracts at a greater rate than the steel spindle and puts it in a serious bind. You may have a different version, or improved design or you may just be lucky or I unlucky but hundreds of us didn't get together and make this up. But I can guarantee they won't seize up doing the bottle flip. I don't really know what is gained by just using the valve but go with what works for you. Mike
The contraction I was referring to was in length. Not cross section. The threads themselves don't bind, it's the needle valve to the seat. Just thought I'd clarify that to avoid the inevitable responses. Mike
My Nova+ has stuck, it needed a generous amount of burning meths to unstick it. Now I always flip the bottle and let it cool off before closing the regulator.
