But once it's set up you COULD put a deflated dry cleaning bag over the top and tape to the bucket. Those tiny bubbles are hydrogen.....
Borga, I added TSP to the water, I can see where a deep, circular container would be best, as now I have to do one side at a time, closed up, a pain. Very surprised how much crud sticks to my spikes, the sheet metal is not attracting any material, but the bubbling occurs along it. Something to do this weekend, about like watching water boil. I did fire up half a dozen of my old MSR stoves, plus one of my FireFlys. Duane
nzmike, thanks for remembering that. Ventilation is the way to go. Don´t trap the gas in a bag. Use inox as cathode. Normal iron will galvanically oxidize. That's the crud you see.
An important safety tip: DO NOT use stainless steel electrodes! The chromium in stainless steel will form hexavalent chromium compounds that are both toxic and carcenogenic.
I've used four, rusty spikes and added the heavy sheet metal. My chargers meter reading went up when I added the sheet metal. Just wish I could locate the bigger piece I picked up a month ago to use specifically for this. The piece of sheet metal I'm using doesn't corrode like the nails have and this morning after shutting down the operation last night since I work out of town, had a layer of crud in the bottom. I'll have to filter that out next weekend when I find time so I can continue. I see what is meant by taking time to work. Duane
