Bonjour everybody, Today I used a lathe for the first time. This is such an incredible tool for people like us !!! My attempt was to make a tiny silent burner for small gasoline stoves. I used a large brass nut for the top and a screw tube to produce the inner wall. I somehow messed up drilling the thing and broke few drill bits so I had to review the size of the holes… Eventually, I end up with a working burner but not very punchy. Next time, I'll have to play with the parameters.... If you have any advice, I'll be more than glad to re-jump on the lathe-machine !! Here's few pics :

Hi Nikos The burner would work better if the gas jet was not passing past the outside of your homemade cap where the hex is, if you machine a brass cap assembly like a silent burner with a round flat plate & tube , an inner cap & an outer cap with the rings of holes it will work fine. Very nice! When cranked right up it seems to run a little rich with some yellow at the tips, this does not surprise me as the cap seems to partially obscure the air holes in the side of the burner bell. What size of hole are you drilling in the cap, and how many?
It's 18 holes of 2mm. I wanted to drill two rows of 1mm instead but I broke the drill bit. I am wondering if the performance would have been the same...!?
A different approach but it seems to work well. Can we have a picture of the underside of this please. As for hole size the area is whats important each 2mm hole is 2x2x3.147 square where 1mm holes would of been 0.5x0.5x3.147 square so a lot smaller You would of needed 3 rows and still been short of the mark
Hi, You are very right, Geeves. We have 56 mm2 of holes and it seems to be the right amount. I'll manage to make a shorter one so the flame would be nestled inside the bell, to conduce more the heat to the tube. Here's the little plate I added on the bottom.
Thats a long way from the traditional approach but obviously works very well. Keep this one intact and make another to experiment on. Its quite possible you hit a sweet spot and everything you try will be worse. You wont be able to go back if you only have one cap. It does confirm that the plan in my head using a brass frost plug I got cheap as a dragonfly cap could just work once I start drilling
Good morning, An early test using an other stove. This time, only a round plate (from carpentry dpt) and the drilled plumber cap. The combustion is still unperfect and I think this stove would require more holes. Few more experimentations to go and we may have an easy £3 silent cap. the video
Try a piece of metal tube a tight fit in the hole in the washer extending about half the distance inside the cap and the same amount below the washer. This will create a crude venturi speeding up the fuel making a better burn.
