    Hi all

    Does anybody know of a current model of stove that burns or can be adapted to burn meths at pressure (like the Optimus 111T/111C/199)? I like meths as it's relatively safe and from a sustainable source, although I realise it has half the power of other fuels. Maybe there is a stove out there that just needs a replacement jet? I think manufacturers are missing a trick by not having a meths burner in their range.

    Have you seen the price of meths (spirit) in the UK shops? I've got a couple of meths stoves but hardly ever use them due to the cost of the fuel.

    Methanol is a good cheap alternative if you can source it locally.

    Ive found that meths is between £7-£10 per litre. :rage: However my brother has a meths stove in his boat and he buys it in bulk over the internet cheaper,I dont have any details but it might be worth looking into if you use alot of it.

    Meths is pretty harsh on rubber parts, even those good for hydrocarbon fuels.

    I would rate paraffin as being safer since a pool of it wont ignite easily and when it does burn, the flame is very visible.

    I was very lucky recently. A lady put an unwanted, full, 5 litre container on Ebay for £6.00, collection only. As she was only 15 minutes away from me I snapped it up :D . I'll be keeping for priming only though.

    David said;
    I have to tell you about this- I have a "homemade" fuel bottle with a "buna-n" (aka "nitrile") O ring which has now had purple dyed methylated spirits stored in it for over a year. Tonight, (as we have not been evacuated, and may dodge THAT bullet :thumbup: )
    I did some cleaning which required some alcohol. The seal on the fuel bottle has held up WONDERFULLY!!.
    Yes, "YMMV", but these O rings come from a local auto parts dealer. The ally bottle, the plastic stopper, and the O rings have held up fine and have had meths in them for well over a year. ( the purple dyed meths came from the "Sterno" company and were originally labelled "chaffing dish fuel" I believe.)

    when i buy meths for my son's trangia, at wilkos & boyes it's £3/500ml. at countdown it's £1.19. i think countdown is a group of independants who buy as a consortium. perhaps others are lucky enough to have one?

    The only pressurized (i.e. with pump) spirit stove I have heard of is the Norma 25.

    Though I have been lucky enough to have nailed two quite some time ago, they seem to be as rare and chicken's teeth nowadays. All the others I have seen are "pressurized" by heat or gravity. Please let me know if you find different.

    Thanks for the heads up on the Norma 25 Gordon; I'd never heard of one before. I am currently toying with the idea of converting a Trangia Multifuel X2 to burn meths but I will move to the modified stoves section to continue that theory!
