I received this wonderful little Russian 8R clone from NZ Mike this April (in a very beneficial to me, trade) when my wife and I stopped in for a visit whilst we were traipsing around New Zealand. Thanks Mike, she cleaned up very nicely and burns like a champ. I owe you big time! I am wondering about the wind screen, as it is obviously original equipment, but haven't seen any examples in pictures here or otherwise of that type of windscreen. Could it be an addition by a very talented metalworker, or might it be original? Stan

Is that blue hammerite paint? How did you paint it so nicely? I have been painting my radius 43 with blue hammerite and brush and it is not turning up very nice . :-/
Too generous a coat of paint, Mikko, by the looks of it. Depending on the formula of the paint, the old school learned us to make the paint flow on metal by proper thinning in combination of warming paint and metal. People into vintage restoration could point out which paint to use for brushwork, and how. Mike.
hammerite is a strange paint. The worst thing you can do to it is put it on too thin. Its meant to be thick.
On the windscreen -- that windscreen came from the factory for a brand of 8R copies from the Asian market. It would probably fit on most 8R and 8R-copies. Are you sure your stove is of Russian manufacture? I have one stove with that windscreen and the case is distinctive in one obvious way in that the cover is designed to slide off the hinge-pin when opened. The Russian stoves I have seen use the ends of the handle as the hinge-pin and the case does not come apart.

Thanks everyone....No I'm not certain it's a russian clone, now more than ever. That key is from a svea123 and didn't come with the stove, and the hinges slide to one side and the top comes right off. There never was any sort of catch for a wrench on the inside top so I'd guess it didn't have the Optimus type round valve adjustment tool, and had one of the multi-tool adjustment handles on it from the factory. So best guess is that is an asian copy of a russian copy of the Optimus 8r.....whew! Not that that's a problem mind you, I'm fairly well travelled and have seen lots of great things all around the world and the stove works extremely well and is very well made, very robust! The paint job is the accumulation of probably a dozen very light coats of "rattle-can" engine enamel, done outside in a no wind situation. Now, if I could only find a way to convert it to kero Stan

Hi Excellent stove All Russian clone of 8R - only gray color with a logo on a cover - others never were issued. Such in Russia made only one plant. If the similar model got to you is can be recoloured or restored. On Russian models - a thread on a tank of inch type - 1/2 inches. Tank have a nikel covered - some have a brass tank - nikel go off after hard using.

I tried it out on a particularly windy day last week, (hit the papers). The wind was strong enough to take down lots of big trees, hit some houses etc. Maybe 90 kph gusts. The stove remained lit throughout, and although was affected somewhat, would have still cooked a meal. I took the screen off and couldn't even get it lit so it works well. Thanks for the pics of the stove John, I'm going to copy them with your permission and print them off to keep with the stove. After accounting for paper fading, it's almost the same colour as I painted it, engine enamel Blue! Stan
