Of cause the fuel qualit is important, and this have not been a regular problem for me due to use of clean fuel. Still we know the problem, and I have an idea of the cause. The evaporation in the tube/generator etc. If the heat is not to high the promlem decreses. I will gues this ranking will be right from best to worst. (Just based on design) (the brands are only exsamples, and I belive other makes will be equal with equal burner design) 1 Multifuel burners as Primus Omnifuel and Optimus Nova 2 Uprigt gasoline burners as in Optimus no 8 3 Gasburners as US army M 1950 4 Keroburners as Optimus 00 and 111 (roarer) 5 Silent keroburners as Optimus 111C 6 Silent keroburners as Optimus 111T 7 Burner with generatortube under the the hottest flame aerea. . MSR and Primus white-gas stoves. 8 Burners with thick generatortube directly thru the blue flame as MSR XGK 9 Burners with thin generatortube directly thru the blue flame as Coleman peek 1 stoves. Still I think this may be minor problems, and I've never had problems with my Coleman-stoves nor my M 1950, but thay hav not ran more than approx 100 hours. What do you think/know? Dag S
I think the problem is pyrolytic cracking rather than leaving less volatile residuals, but I think you're right - the generator should be as little above the boilng point of the fuel as possible. I think fuels without additives - simple alkanes like odourless kerosene might be better than compounds with double bonds etc but I don't know enough chemistry to be sure. The material of the tube matters as well I think - cracking seems to be catalysed by iron and nickel, so maybe brass burners are less prone to clogging. My old MSR GK has a spring wrapped round the generator, which the instructions say is to keep the generator from overheating. Wonder why that disappeared?
Murray, the simple alkanes like odourless kerosene I've tried in pressure lamps have only clogged the vapouriser myabe I had a bad batch. The simple Alkanes like kerosene seem to burn better in some of the multifuel stoves I have though
