    3 502 (Love that stove)

    My son has a 400
    (and a 425 E and a 425F)
I have sold a lot of 400 and 533 here, to finance my collection. Coleman is unknown here, and with a little bit of instruction, they are very easy to sell.

I have an Optimus 324. While I love the Optimus stoves, the 324/323 lines seem like very poor atempts at single burner easy light white gas stoves. Ironically I just recieved a 505 last night. I flashed it up and had it going full roar before the priming meths would be done burning on an 8/123/111...

They might not be as pretty or ramantic as a brass stove, but do they ever work well! Cheap too on this side of the pond!

    533 Sportster 2 (Dual fuel)
442 Feather Dual/Duel Fuel really they spell it both ways (came in a box with a frog on it)
Alpine CPS (number unknown) runs on butane/propane mix

They're good stoves - the 533 especially so, even if clunky.

Has anyone here ever clogged a generator using unleaded - how long did it take?.

I own a 442 (brand new), got it off somebody for eigth tins of lager beer last week and I also own a 553 given to me free by a neighbour but the generator tube was kaput. I put a new one in and it is excellent.
Both work fine although the 553 is a bit chunky for my liking. The 442 is pretty coool except the little flame regulator arm is very stiff.
My question is: Why do Coleman stoves get a bad name? I recently read on the 'net that it was the stove you are most likely throw in the river
    What's the story?
    Regards,
    Alan :)

2x 442, a533, 502 & easiest to regulate is my 400A. All running (some for more than ten years) on unleaded. Other than a couple of O rings in the regulator valves I've had no problems, BUT I don't get the same pleasure from them as I do with an 8r or 123 or 199 etc.

Not yet. I am hoping to get my hands on an earlier Peak 1. I had one years ago, had lots of problems with the stove and returned it to the store for a refund. Now I have a Sigg Tourist kit for the Peak 1, but no stove. It makes me nuts that I can't find one at a garage sale or a thrift store. There has to be many of them in this part of the globe.

Put me down for "used to own one" . It was a Peak II. Worked most of the time but was not what I would call totally reliable. It was replaced by an early Whisperlight shaker jet. The Whisperlight is totally reliable and works perfectly every time out. I still have it and it stays in my pack as my primary.

Right at the bottom of the list of 'want it's' I'm afraid.

Unless anyone wants to donate one to a lost cause.

Those that come up on eBay here all seem to go to the 'carp' fishing fraternity who pay daft money for them, that's why they probably end up in the river Alan.

Perhaps I can pick one up on a similar deal I made on the Coleman twin mantle last year. BNIB from the shop ?25. \:D/

Doug, I have never really thought of the Alpine as a Coleman stove, just their badged version of the EPI gas, but add 25% to the price.

There were adaptors available at one time to enable the Alpine to connect to standard butane bottles, anyone know if they are still available?

I agree with you on that one Simes.

If you mean so that they will run on pierceable canisters, then yes they are readily available, I think either Hi Gear or Gelert make them. Our local "outdoor shop" has them so they should be everywhere !

I don't have any Coleman's, and have never used one either. A quick check on the various comments here seem to indicate that they have reliability problems. :-k :-k

    Hi Keith

You've just reminded me that those adaptors are available, I'll have to look out for one. No the one I was on about was for the standard Camping Gaz refillables. There was at one time an extremely small refillable bottle which might have been usefull for cycle trips instead of throwing away canisters.

Sorry - I should not have mentioned the gas ones.... Earwig Oh again.

Way back when god was a lad, shortly after the demise of the separate groundsheet, there was a stove called the EpiGas Alpine which folded up small and was made in England these looked like this:
    alpinestove.jpg
    People liked them

Coleman bought the rights to build (or the company I;m not sure) and produced it as the ALPINE HPX.
    Review

Then they buggered about and built this:
    |imgRemoved|

Which, to the untutored eye, looks similar - but it is different.
The old Alpine had a loop of brass rod from the burner jet block which sat up into the flame and warmed the fuel feed tube - which allows the fuel can to be inverted - big flame much heat GOOD.

The CPS version has a larger diameter burner head - but no anti flare gronicle - instead it relied on conduction from the burner directly - and this more or less works.

AND THEN THE BASTARDS DID A BAD THING.

They fitted a click-stop control knob which buggers up the fine simmer control and DOES NOT FIT THROUGH THE HOLE iN THE SIDE OF A TRANGIA.

The story goes on: Sunn-Flair now market it as the Sunn-Gas alpine... but which version I do not know....
    ....

    Hey, Guys,

OK, deep breath, and here we go:

1 ? Solus #531, made in the USA, which, to me, is the prettier of the Solus tribe.

    3 ? 530, all with tins, 1 OK, 1 very good, and 1 in near mint condition. B46, A47, A46.

    1 ? US Army 1951.

    1 ? US Army 1966.

    1 ? 502, 12/81.

1 ? 505 Pocket II (unfired), with tin, instructions, and vinyl cover, 2/77.

    1 ? Peak 1 400, 6/82.

    1 ? Peak 1 400, (?) Can?t find it right now, but it?s here, someplace?

    1 ? Peak 1 400A7017 REI 50th Anniversary Model (gold paint), 12/87.

    1 - Feather 442 Dual Fuel, mint, 2/93.

    1 ? Peak 1 550A Multi-fuel, Canada, 1/88.

    1 ? Peak 1 550B Multi-fuel, USA, 7/90.

2 ? Peak 1 Apex II, both bought new, one used a lot, one NIB, both 5/94.

    1 ? 521 Squad Stove, A44.

That's all that come to hand at this moment, but there may be a few others hiding down in the Hobbit Hole, or out in the shed. Great stoves, great company, and I've very much enjoyed using them over the years! Take care, and God Bless!

    Every Good Wish,
    Doc Mark

    I have and use
400A-- needs the brass nut on the red control tightened now and then or you have a stove in flames
530 B46 --noisy and unstable but BTU's to spare
502-700 -- I think the optional heat drum can also be classified a stove, I've cooked lots on it
533-- made it to Iraq and back with a buddy of mine, I hope it brought him good luck
Apex II-- the most complicated of my stock, I only lite it 2 times,

After much thought Ive come to the conclusion that I have never owned a Coleman product of any sort that I can recall. Aslo low on my list of stoves to get. Im sure there are good ones and bad ones but liquid fuel models are.....funny looking....and heavy......bulky looking. Ive handled a few in stores but I just couldnt dig them. Even the 2 burner suit case ones look odd. Solid but complicatedly heavy. I speak from total ignorance, as I said Ive never owned used, been near to one that was at all. I could be guilty of judging a book by its cover. Probably. Still look funny tho.

Do not own Coleman single burner, there are a few double burners lying around here, and a Coleman lantern. Am looking to find one at a yard sale sometime. For some reason(maybe to prevent the spread of the contagious stovie disease), my area is practically void of all single burner stoves, unless you want propane.
Paul B: About your 400A's loose nut. Use a very tiny amount of weak loctite on the threads and then suitably tighten, should solve the problem, yet will not be impossible to remove should a repair required the nut to be removed!
