So between dealing with a sick dad and preparing to hike the "westcoast trail", I have had an unbelievable past few weeks. While gathering the things I need, I came across what I take when I back pack...and thought I would post a few pics. When Im hiking, I use trangia burners for weight and ease of use. Yes they aren't as powerful as kero's etc, but with so few parts...I love them. So here are a few pics of the 2 Trangias I use. The first is the esbit/trangia franken stove I made a while back...sorry if I should have posted this in the other section...but it says stove forum so... I saw an Esbit stove in the store and thought that the Trangia burner would fit.. e I cut out the section of the burner plate so that the burner would fit...and it did.Storing the stove looks like this. The burner fit exactly into the stand and acts as a potstand and wind screen. I do use a folding screen to make things more efficient and it works very well. I normally take this with me on day hikes, but as my brother will be joining me on this trip, he will carry this set with him. The other Frankengia I have is based on the Trangia set, but made from an old camp pot set that I bought 20+ years ago before he and I went back packing through Europe. I was going to toss them, but thought wait!... I want to try and make things things do one more trip...and this is what happened. The large pot was carved to be the "oven/ windscreen " for the set. The .08L pot is the cooking vessel...the upper screen is a baking pan I bought for .50c, and the plates I have make the base and lid for the set. I can boil water...bake bread and muffins..or fry with the other frying pan I have all depending on how things are set up. I hope these pics make sense as I am showing the set up for an oven. When it is just a stove..the burner and trivet go in the bottom of the large pot and I forego the second trivet. this is a 1 cup loaf of bread ready to be baked.. baking.. and done..... For so little space..these little stoves can do so much. Hope you all can appreciate the idea and pics.. dave
I would hazard a guess that the foil provides a heat seal across the slot that's been cut out of the "oven" pot to accomodate the handle of the pot the bread is in once it is in place? I agree - very clever set-up. Cheers, Graham.
As stated, the foil strip helps keep the heat in. Since I took these pics a while back, I purchased some oven mit material and made a tent for the set up and it holds way more heat...in fact I had to adjust the cooking times. It then becomes a pseudo "bag" to keep everything together. I love having fresh bread and muffins when in the middle of nowhere..
Dead clever! Those fold out tab stands turn up for peanuts (I have one some place) I may have to keep an eye out for one to chop up....
Here in Uk I see loads of "Tab Stands" as described, or Tablet Burners. They are ex-Military, and I can get them unused, with a full pack of Hexamine fuel tablets for about a dollar each. They were issued with each man's ration pack and provided enough fuel to heat up his rations for one day. Nobody wants them now. They give off nasty, very unhealthy, fumes when cooking. Not recommended!. If the empty "Tab Stands" are useful to anyone let me know. They are very light pressed steel. Steve.
