Hi all, this is my first post so please bear with me. I have just bought an Optimus 45 off ebay. it is missing its legs and flame ring, but apart from that it seems to be all complete. I cleaned it out with hot soapy water and filled with paraffin (kerosene) and fired her up. Quite a nice flame, but after a few minutes, I noticed a vapour around the priming ring. I held a light to it and got some flame.Does this sound like it needs some new washers? I also understand this stove uses lead washers, where do these go?
    regards tom

Ho Tom, there are two heat-proof washers, one each side of the spirit-cup, these need to be replaced:

There is a lead washer between the tank and the riser tube/ burner. If there is no leak in this area you are likely OK.

Click on the Fettle Box link at Top RHS for a supplier of replacement washers.
Good Luck with your "new" classic stove.
    Best Regards,

Welcome, a great place to hang out, even if you have all your stoves running properly. A quick fix would be to just tighten the burner more where it goes into the riser. The best fix, take it all apart and replace the heatproof washers and lead washer. The lead washer would be the one where the riser screws into the fount/tank. It'll be pretty well conformed to the hole. With my 45's, I found I had to tighten the parts pretty snug to stop leakage, not to the point things are going to distort. Members here sell washers that you would need or you can make some. There is a wtb for sale are with member services there also. Our sponsor, Base Camp sales many parts and the site owner has "The Fettle Box" online store that has a link to the right below the pretty lady holding the stove.

Hi kerophile, thanks for the info and advise. I have read some of your posts and found them very informative. How do I go about ordering washers off you, as yours looked pretty good.
also can you recommend where i can get a flame ring for this optimus 45.
I also have a primus 54, which worked perfectly until i decided to clean the head in vinegar to clean it, I,m wondering now whether I have destroyed the washers here also, as it will not hold its pressure now.
    thanks , tom

Hi Duane, thanks for the welcome and advice. This is my 3rd stove, my other 2 being an optimus 00 and a primus 54 silent. This little 45 should clean up nicely, as it has no dents or soldering that I can see. I am very pleased with it, as I bought it on Thursday and it arrived this morning, all the way from Scotland. It pressurises very easily, and although I have some vapour around the primer cup, it doesn't seem to lose pressure when running.
I,m off now to read some more posts, once again , many thanks.
    Tom

Hi Tom, If you send me a PT I am sure I can fix you up with Heat Resistant burner washers, a lead washer, and a suitable flame-ring.
I trust the Canterbury location refers to the UK?
    Best Regards,
    Kerophile.
