I see on the bay of evil, that this manufacturer has a two part silent cap, where Gary and Quiet Stove have a one part cap that does it all that has to be placed just right to work and the JL caps with the two parts seem to set in the burner a little better maybe? I like to play on the bay of evil, so last night I lost the bid by a buck on one. I see another up this AM for the DragonFly now. What do you think? Duane
Personally, while I prefer a two part cap, those Jimmy Lewis ones look to me like big old lumps that might fail to maintain enough heat to keep vapourisation going during prolonged simmering. If I understood the listings right, they are machined out of solid bar and therefore will highly likely have more mass to keep to temperature compared to other variants, hence my concern above. However, testing will tell and I could be completely wrong. If they are machined out of solid bar then I'd personally not partake just due to the sheer waste involved, but that's just me. Ref. missing an ebay win by a buck. I don't think you can claim that - the winning bidder may have bid $100 above what you bid. So if you'd bid an extra $99 you'd have still lost by a buck! Cheers, Graham
Graham, you are right, I was thinking that once again on my drive to work. The winner only pays a bit more than what the loser wants to pay. Duane
This is all speculation. The proof of the pudding is in the eating. I hope some of the recent batch of JL caps were won by a CCS member, who will report results. Yonadav
Greetings, All, Interesting turn of events! I'll bet BernieDawg is beaming like a proud Papa at how many guys are jumping into the silent cap making biz, now!! BD began the whole shootin' match, and that is really, really cool!! Go Dawg!! 8) Does anyone know "Jimmy Lee", personally? I'd like to know more about him, or this company, if there really is no real "Jimmy Lee". I also note that no photos show this cap actually simmering, and I can't recall any mention of simmering in the details, though I may have missed it. If this cap does not simmer, then at least for me, I have no use for it. It's a great idea, though, as Graham says, a tad on the chunky looking side. But, again, simmering is the main detail when cooking, and I have plenty of other stoves that can boil water super fast and cannot simmer. No need to emasculate the DF and take away it's simmering capability by using this cap, IF it does not simmer. Did I miss seeing mention of it....?? Also, I, too, would like to know how much it weighs. HikerDuane, how much did the last one bring on the bay of evil? I'll keep any eye on this one and see how high it goes. Take care, and God Bless! Every Good Wish, Doc
Pre-production prototype from Dino? Making a silent cap But I may be mistaken ... and undoubtedly am, but good fun to feed this guessing game! John
Doc, winning bid was $57. I had put in a bid last week, pumping up the price as I like to do. Have not jacked Gary's price for a couple weeks now, but I think he may be sold out of production. Glad I lost, I have other things going on and started to worry that I might win it, then remeberated that one of my BD caps will work on my 520/530. Doh! Always nice to have a selection as you know. Duane
Morning, All, OK, I've learned that this is not Gary, so that puts an end to all our speculation! I've also learned that the Silent Star cap for the DF weighs 81 grams, whilst I know that my own BD Dragon Tamer cap weighs just 43 grams, almost half as much. Still don't know if the Silent Star will simmer, but that's an important consideration, too, at least for me. I will send the seller a note, asking about that, and about who and where he is, just for grins. I'll report back, if anything is forthcoming. In the Auction watch section, referring to this cap, 4B said that he put his check in the "not Gary" box, and so he wins the gold star! I, too, think that BD would come up with a different idea for a two-piece silent cap, and hey, maybe we'll see something like that from Gary, "one of these days"!! 8) Take care, and God Bless! Every Good Wish, Doc P.S. Just sent off my questions to the seller of the Jimmy Lewis caps, and I'll report back if any further information is forthcoming.
Greetings, All, I just talked to Gary, and if I may slighty misquote Mark Twain, "The rumors of "his" death have been greatly exaggerated"!! As I figured, he's alive and well, and super busy in his workshop. Not only is he making more caps to offer (some may go up this weekend), but he's also doing tons of custom work, for himself, for clients, and for the future!! He does not know the maker of the Silent Star caps, and wants to know what I learn, if said maker will respond to my questions to him. He has checked them out, and also thinks that the seller has mimicked the way Gary lists his BernieDawg offerings (just as the "other maker" did when he setup his QS caps for sale) [NOTE: MY thought, not Gary's]. Interesting, eh?? So, keep an eye out for more outstanding caps from Gary, which weigh much less than the competition, and as an editorial comment, DO simmer, and quite nicely, very soon!! 8) Take care, and God Bless! Every Good Wish, Doc
Hey Doc, Maybe his name is Jimmy Lewis I would have named mine Thermonuclear silent cap or something like that. I think its interesting that he chose cast iron for the base maybe for the thermal feedback but I wonder if it might be too much thermal feedback over a long period of time. Seems like the tube goes down quite a ways. Just ruminating on the one picture I see. Don't know how long it would last here in Hawaii either.
I am working on a silent cap with built-in harmonica reeds. The prototype only plays one tune, speed increases as you crank up the stove. The prototype plays 'Careless Whisper' by WHAM. In the future I hope to add other titles and possibly audio books. Recommended retail price is 200 USD but I will be letting these go out the door for $199.95.
Hey, TYD, I'll take ten!! Don't bother wrapping them, I'll eat them here!! Good one, Mate! God Bless, Doc
Big BTU, Thanks for the info. I see his seller name has "James Lee" as a part of it. Maybe his name is Jimmy Lee Lewis?? HEY, I have all of his old records!!! (What? You say that was "JERRY LEE LEWIS"??? Oh, well that's very different, then.... I'll get me coat.....................! God Bless the weak-minded... like me! Ye Olde Doc
Last time I had a couple of caps off BD, MD37 & MD39, I received a disclaimer with them. I wonder if the new supplier, offers the same ???
presscall penned: "Disclaimer? What, if the buyer has to report "Goodness, gracious, great balls of fire"? John " John, that is absolutely hilarious, Mate!!!! I guess anyone suffering from "that" malady was straddling his stove whilst testing..... NOT recommended, and should think no disclaimer was necessary, in any case. Should someone have that befall them, I would guess that's just Darwin, culling the herd, as it were! Again, very funny, John! Many thanks for the guffaw I just enjoyed after reading it! Take care, and God Bless! Every Good Wish, Doc
Hey, Guys, Rick, I'm listening to "that" Jimmy Lewis, even as I type this! Good song, and nicely done, on his part, and on yours for posting this!! AS to the seller, I have now gotten his response, which was very enjoyable to read! I've asked his permission to post the entire thing here, and if he is amenable, I'll post it as soon as I hear back from him. As a teaser, all our guesses are WAY off base!! More, as soon as I hear from this Gentleman, and I use that term quite deliberately. Take care, and God Bless! Every Good Wish, Doc
