Saw this today at a specialty beer store. It's from Belgium.

 

Collectors item to round out that big collection.

That is a Beautiful label.

Unfortunately for me IPA's are far too bitter, and light colored beers in general are on my no-no list as they tend to trigger gout attacks. I can, however, still have the occaisional Porter or stout. According to my sawbones, if I can't see through it, I can drink it.

According to what I've read India Pale Ales were developed by the British because during shipping from England to India on the sloooow sailing ships of the time, ale and beer went bad. So brewers kept adding hops until the ale got to India in "drinkable" condition. Some even liked it. Then breweries sprung up in India and decent brews were to be had locally.

Why IPA's continue to be made is known only to G-d and the eighteen people on the planet who drink them.

Thug, I believe your sources are correct. Hops is a preservative in addition to a bittering agent, so there you have it. As to why people drink it, some people (such as myself) like bitter. A good IPA can be very complex and interesting.

Now I gotta find some. Perhaps I can find some next time I go to Denver.

 

DN- Third Eye Pale ale and Modus Hoperandi are both IPA style pale ales brewed at separate brew companies in Durango, Colorado. Both are delicious by my lights. (and way to heavy in carbs and sugars for me now... wah. :-(

Edit- I'm thinking you can find at least one of them in your local liquor store!

 

I've had both Randy, both are lovely. Man, I've got choices around here, this county has a population of about 18,000, we have no less than 4 breweries, 3 distilleries and 2 wineries. I think everyone in the county is sloshed 24/7

 

The shield is the emblem of Stockholm with the head of Eric the saint.
Is it made in Belgium as well or imported? Iv'e never seen it for sale here.

 

It's also brewed and bottled with Svea stoves

 

The feller on the label still has his eye brows, must be an experienced user....

Well, here's another one, also Belgian. Ordinary lager, app. 5% alc. Again with a picture that includes a noble knight. I once found a 2,5 litre Primus Beer from the Czeck Republic, but that one is long gone

The noble knight is Hertog Jan Primus (Duke John Primus, I guess he was the first ). I think one or 2 years ago, after some blind tasting a jury voted Primus Best Belgian Pils. Not bad for a stove uh!?!

Hi Wim, Still got an unopened bottle of Primus beer from Newark two years ago when you brought a crate or two over. Very nice it was too! Steve.
