Ok, I am looking for some realistic insight as to why on earth .8L MSR Titanium fuel bottles are being listed (on the bay of evil) and actually selling for $135 and up to over $225! I saw one listed the other day for $180 and thought it was a typo. There is a new, unwrapped on there right now with a buy it now of $245, one with 10 bids/3 days to go and it's at $167.50. There are multiple ended (sold) auctions in the triple digits.

    -Are they "rare" or collectible?
-Are they really that much more durable and lighter than a regular aluminum fuel bottle?

Can you help shed some light on this for me? I am baffled by this seemingly extraordinary pricing for a simple fuel bottle, and for the life of me can't figure out the "need" for a multi hundred dollar fuel bottle.
I'd rather have a $5 vintage SIGG bottle and spend the extra money on a nice stove (or stoves, or other equipment)!

Thanks for any thought on this.

I've wondered too. I see though that the one that was a BIN for $225 I believe it was, is relisted as bin for $245 now. It's not a Campingo or a 22/22B.

Edit: The new Optimus 199 now I guess, that wave is over I think.

A standard Sigg bottle (or even a clone) would be my choice too. But I certainly wouldn't spend the savings on another eBay listing 160941872583 where someone listing on behalf of a charity thinks opening bids of £300 is cheap! Looks like a primus number 1 in a wooden box to my untrained eye.
Not helped by another listing in the US of a primus no 1 that has an Optimus silent burner on it going for about $500.
Well out of my price range anyway.
    Best regards

I've been buying crap off e-prey seemingly forever and learned early on that something mentioned as "going for" or "being sold for" on eprey means some seller is either totally ignorant, greedy beyond belief, or is trolling for someone who has more money than than brains or, is actually stupider than a hemlock stump.

I'll wager there's an ebay dictionary somewhere that gives useful definitions of ebay catch phrases. Here's a few in no particular order:

very unique...... I've only seen pictures of this thing.

Very rare........ I've never even seen pictures of this thing.

Said to be..... I've got no idea.

Vintage....... Might be older than three weeks

Antique....... Might be older than a year.

Burns Kerosene...... Burns anything BUT kerosene

    Burns Gasoline........once

    burns alcohol........whatever that is

Vary unique and rare......... I have almost a second grade education and a two digit IQ into the bargain.

You all get the drift. As to Titanium fuel bottles, people with too mucn money and too little sense will buy then, because as anyone knows, "Grossly overpriced" is the equivalent of "Quality".

I'll continue to use my alumin(i)um sigg and MSR bottles until it's time for my dirt nap. Just as I'll continue to drive my paid for '92 Ford pickup until the same time.

Eh, fashion hikers. Lots of these ultralight hikers use backpacking as an excuse to buy expensive toys and wave 'em around at people. The TI MSR bottles are no longer in production and they weigh a few grams less, that's all.

Kinda blows me away though, what are you doing with a liquid fossil fuel stove if lightness is your priority? Really, I love liquid fuel and it's what I use, but canister stoves are much lighter, and alcohol stoves are lighter still! And if you want to use alcohol, put your fuel in a plastic bottle!

My theory is that the seller is counting on someone (acting irrationally) wanting to get a special gift for a special person. If the buyer is unfamiliar with the real value, and is trying to impress someone new in their life, and perhaps gets a big allowance from daddy (and always has) -- that helps.

I am thinking of cloning such bottles and sell the clones as "one off" prototypes, starting bid 999.99 euros as I have been told that to steal from particularly rich and stupid people is an act of charity to yourself.

Earlier this year, I bought some 1.5liter SIGG bottles at 5€ each. In my book, that's a good deal! Of course, their extreme heavy weight makes them no match for ultra-light pussies...

    Best regards,

I've been experimenting with a 3D printer and fresh air. I've managed to print out some MSR type fuel bottles that weigh absolutely nothing, and have the added advantage of incorporating the latest invisibility cloaking technology.

A very interesting side effect when using my new bottles is when you pour in some kerosene it creates the excellent optical illusion of passing straight through the bottle and splattering all over your shoes! Amaze your friends with this trick!

Currently my pre-production models come out around $10k each. I'm in the Production Engineering phase at the moment and hope to get this down to $2.5k a bottle through volume manufacture very soon. I consider that excellent value for zero weight.

As my tag line for these fuel bottles says "Nothing Could Be Better"

PM me to place an order, and don't wait for the rush to start.

    Cheers, Graham

Graham, if you need some testers, keep me in mind. I'm working on getting my backpack gear weight down a little more.

I remember seeing a new MSR Ti bottle for sale in the Climbing sop in Ambleside for £90 about eight years ago so the prices that they go for on Ebay does not surprise me.
I was tempted when I thought the label said £9.

I have around the house some place an old MSR catalogue which I think shows two sizes of the Ti fuel bottles.
I don't think MSR sell them any more which does not surprise me at the price they were sold for originally.

To loose an old Sigg bottle would be a pig but to loose a Ti one!
I think a bit of a gimmick, the bottles were out about the same time as the Ti Op Nova sold in the wooden presentation box.

    There are two things that could be going on here; :-s either the preppers are buying these expen$ive fuel bottles because they want to have some measure of security of caching some fuel after the "ap'pockyclippse" (a nod to Helen Buday), or they believe they will wait out the next nuclear attack in some sparsely populated country on the slopes of the Karakoram range. :? Who would want weak flimsy aluminum fuel bottles? =;

It's pretty obvious who's going to buy these MSR Ti bottles. Someone who's a great big (the clue's in the first three letters of Titanium).

    Cheers, Graham.

As I posted earlier: Either far too much money and far too little sense, or stupider than a hemlock stump. Possibly both.

Either way, I need names, phone numbers and addresses!

I'll take two of those bottles, please! NOT. Yeah, some idiot is buying them, for what? a milligram weight savings? Wow, just take a little less fuel, or leave the gorp home.

If you're going to save half a pound or several ounces that's one thing, but mere shavings of weight, nope. For the price, it ain't worth it, as well remarked above.

its all about weight although once you fill it with 750g of fuel the 50g you save is hardly worth it. I will be keeping to ali
