I'm not a stove collector, I buy only ones that I think will make good users, are interesting or I just really like them. So why, when I got home from the car boot this morning did I find this in one of my bags? Well I've got maybe 5 stoves that will make good users, 2 that are interesting and another 5 that I really like. I guess this falls under a new category of "It was cheap" - £4. It might make a good user I don't know, it seems very hot. It's certainly not interesting nor do I particularly like it. It's over for me isn't it? - I think my addiction has spread. But I don't want you to feel sorry for me, I'll fight this thing as hard as I can. Oh no, I just remembered I've got an antique fair tomorrow. I'll fight it next weekend.
Hi Matt, nowt wrong with them Camping Gaz thingies mate! Only thing against them, they're booooooring. Serious now, yours is a nice set that hasn't seen much use, and in all honesty, they work! Only thing to check (when the present can is empty ) is the condition of the rubber grommet. I have a few of these myself, never had a bad grommet but, it happens! (In a few years, these will all become collectors items! ) All the best, Wim
Already are, Wim ... even if it's just the one collector as yet Trio of Bleuets Incidentally, Wim's right about the durability of the grommet that makes the seal between piercing plunger and gas cartridge, but what does happen over the years is that the plunger can stick in its bore (a bit like automobile disc calipers can) and the seal leaks because the plunger's not responding to the spring loading This post shows how to put things right Pierceable gas cartridge appliance safety check-up John
Thanks chaps, I'll give it a chance, I've got about six cartridges (2 EPI gas) that need using up so when they have gone, I will decide whether it's a keeper or not. Sounds like I'll be hanging on to it for a while then. I have to admit I much prefer an old brassy, probably because it's just an extension of the pressure lamps so the two hobbies go hand in hand. But then there is something about this stove, for convenience, it's as difficult to light as turning a knob and lighting a match, which has it's use.
I got one of those Bleuets - I bought it while travelling in Scandinavia, and it served me well. I crossed the border from Sweden to Norway (or the other way around) and the stove I used in the first country turned out useless in the other, as they were using different cartridge systems in those countries. That's how I got to buy the Bleuet, as I could not get cartridges for the stove I had. Sorry - I don't remember which of those countries used what cartridge system. This was over 15 years ago. I wonder if they are unified now. Yonadav
I forgot, considering I don't class myself as a stove collector, I'm desperately trying to find myself a nice Optimus 111T. But I only want one of those because I think it would make a good user.
There should be aplenty 111's on your side of the pond. And plenty of chaps who can help you out too if it needs to be fettled. Cheers
Well Yondav, The union of Sweden and Norway was dissolved in 1905 and I do not think there is much hope for a new union any time soon. As for canisters, "the good thing with standards is that there is so many to choose from" /Lars
I have six or seven Gaz Bleuet stoves and several made by other companies, one from Canada, one from Greece, and two from Italy. I also have several lanterns that use the Bleuet system. I used to find the piercing canisters quite easily, most were Bleuet, made in France or Brazil, some were Primus, made in Sweden and I think Poland. The Primus canisters were painted yellow. I found some in Canada that were made in China, they were orange, if memory serves. All worked in all my appliances. However, now it is nearly impossible to find any at all. It's a crying shame as the stoves and lanterns are well designed, sturdy and not expensive. I've always had good service from the ones I own. Gerry
I'm sorry Matt, you are terminal ; but that is most of us start out, thinking we can "be strong" also "Fight this thing" and "resist". I still find myself lurking around thrift stores and being weak towards a cheap stove or lantern, it will follow me home. It is a good thing I do not venture into pet shelters! The stove you have here is nice and would serve you well on summer outings and picnics. I also managed to find a full box of 6 Bluett Gaz canisters in a second hand store about 3 months ago. Two months ago I found an unused Italian Quick-lite stove with 2 canisters, and last week found a Lampe GT Gaz lantern with new canister and another Italian lantern with a partial canister inside. They are out there, you just have to go look for them. 8-[
Matt, I'm sorry. I should have noticed that you are now infected with "Stovie's Syndrome" and that it is chronic and incurable. Treatment is futile. The only answer is to knuckle under and enjoy it. It isn't terminal and is mostly painless. Until you encounter an unfired 00 or a sweet little Svea 123 non R or one I've only seen, but know they're out there, a Primus 96. I started many years ago, it was inadvertent, but I've always had a soft spot between my ears for stoves, and firearms. Stoves usually tend to be less expensive, and mostly quieter. Good luck and good hunting. I keep a $50 hidden in my billfold just in case. Funny story. About a month after Da Missus and I tied the knot, she was bellyaching to my Mom about my rifles and pistols. She was from an hoplophobic background, and wanted me to choose between her and my guns and handloading. Mom told her I'd gotten my first rifle at the age of six, my first sidearm at seventeen and still had both of 'em and Lord knows how many more, and if she was going to have that fight she'd lose both the fight and me. We've been married now 45 years and have yet to have our first knock down, and drag out. When it comes it'll prolly be on the wire services. Gerry
most people stop denying being stove collectorholics at about 5 stoves Time to be honest. I had been good for nearly a year but a weak moment has seen something nice start mailing its way to me
So the guilty secret is out EH I suppose i better confess too here's my little pile I know , but i am getting therapy though Stu
Ok so admitting your problem is the first step towards beating it, so here goes. Hi everyone, my name is Matthew and I have a stove problem. (Forget the lamps for now) I get the quakes if I don't buy a stove for a while and I have been caught red handed having a crafty fire up when I didn't think anyone was around. Ahh that feels better already. I'm sure that if I continue to attend this support group, I will get through this. So long as no one puts any temptations in front of me. Like a nice Ultimus 8 burner. Mmmmmmm Oh no it's off again.
"I know , but i am getting therapy though" You showed us you therepy session in that post on the monitor furnace. Lovely handiwork but Im not sure it will help.
