Can anyone point me to an exploded view diagram or photos do a disassembled Hipolito No. 1 pump. I suspect mine has been cobbled together:

    G,,day fellow Tasmanian.
I just pulled the pump from my hippo 0
    looks all but the same,
EXCEPT for the spring on the shaft,
    the 0 doesn't have a spring.
mine is original, bought new in Portugal 30 plus years ago.
    hope this helps.
    catch up sometime via pt.
    cheers
    kerry

Thanks. My leather pump cup moves, with its top and bottom clamping nuts, about 2mm. Does yours? That's why I thought it might have a bit missing from the bottom end of the pump shaft. I should probably get a new leather anyway

iff its not damaged soak it in oil.
engine. 3in one, olive. they aren't real fussy.
soak for a day or so.
then it should be able to be expanded a bit and carefully replaced.

It is normal for the pump cup carrier to be able to slide about 2-4mm along the pump shaft. This is how the pump breathes.

When you pull the shaft out, the pump cup carrier rides on the retaining nut. Air flows thru the pump cup carrier, around the pump shaft, and past the nut to the front of the pump cup.

Then you push the pump shaft in, the pump cup carrier slides back onto the taper on the pump shaft, which seals with the carrier, compression is achieved, and air pumped.

It's effectively an un-sprung check valve.

use mineral oil on the leather, vege oils result in dirty oily stuff collecting on the pump rod.

And the spring keeps things from banging together on the up stroke.
