Picked up an 8r from online auction. It arrived pretty filthy but the paint is in good condition. I cleaned it up real nice, replaced the fuel cap rubber, cleaned the tank out and replaced the wick. Primed with white gas, and it fired up nicely. flame tips are a bit yellow and its yellow on simmer. Also a very small flame that i had to blow out from the jet after turning the stove off. I'm thinking the needle needs to be a bit higher. All in all i'm pleased with the results. i'll post pics tomorrow
What I do is remove the needle altogether. One less part to fail or be maladjusted. My favorite stove is the Olde Fashyndde Svea 123 (NON R), I have several as well as a couple of the 123 R models. The Non R and R models with the needle gone work better. Your mileage may vary. Congrats on a good stove, the ACME of stove design in my not very humble opinion. Gerry
Mr. Gerry - i have not tried to remove the needle on my stoves - will have to give a try to see how that works (i have spares w/needles, but no prickers?) willie on the new-fangled 123R/8R Gulf of Mexico
Blaming the little leftover flame on the cleaning needle isn't quite right. If I'm reading you correctly, then it seems as though you are using the cleaning needle to shut the stove off. That's not correct. The needle cleans and the spindle regulates the fuel. A leftover flame that extinguishes on its own results from a bit of unburnt fuel under the jet. A little flame that never extinguishes results from a flow of fuel and indicates that the spindle isn't shutting off the flow. The spindle moves forward when you turn the handle fully clockwise and blocks the hole in the vaporiser, shutting off the fuel. The needle is only raised when you open the the spindle fully counter-clockwise (when the fuel is at full-blast).
Hi Mark, Not using the cleaning needle to shut off. the flame was after turning spindle all the way off to the right. I removed the needle and it's running really nice. still got to post a pic
Did you replace the wick? When I fettled an 8R I used what I thought was 100% cotton string. Now, I don't think so with the problems I have had of late.The burner is getting excess fuel & I think the wick I made has failed. It has to be pure cotton string, there must be no synthetic fibre From a mop-head maybe?
