Can you buy these in the UK? They are cheap enough in the US, but the shipping is at least four times the value of the stove. It would be an interesting extra use for the Swedish Army meths burner.
Interesting question. And yes, the Swedish Army trangia type burner fits the Sterno stove as if it grew there. Every time I bash about in my snake pit I seem to find yet another Sterno Stove. I even found my old Japanned black one from the late 40's. It was handed down to me from my insane favorite uncle who was more an older brother than an uncle. Anyway, I must have at least six of 'em around here. I prefer the stamped steel ones to the alumin(i)um and wire ones. The steel ones are much easier to set up and put away AND the cotton' pickin' door stays shut. Mostly. I find them quite frequently at garage sales and thrift shops, usually for a dollar. I have one of the older double stoves in pressed steel, I'm looking for a double in alumin(i)um. It is now 8:15 in the morning, I haven't slept two hours since last night. Im'na go read some more of "Wormholes" on my Kindle. (Fun Read) Then after Da Missus goes to work, I'll rearrange the pooch and cat on the bed and get a few hours of sleep. How otherwise normal seeming people can sleep without critters on the bed escapes me. It just doesn't seem natural. I've had sleeping critters in bed with me since birth. Mom believed a cat or dog in bed with a baby was a good thing. At one time we had five or six dogs and cats, always at least one slept with the current baby. Had a Dr. (Endocrinologist) visit earlier and she once again read me the Riot Act regarding my blood glucose and cholseterol levels. In my current state of terror, I do have them down to between 80 and 130 for two days (YAY). She seems satisfied with that. Now to manage to keep them there. The cliche of the day is "If it's white, don't bite." Easier to say than do. Carb counting is a PIA, but seems to be necessary. Fortunateley I like almost all veggies I've ever encountered save okra and eggplant (Aubergines). The latest new one to me is kohl-rabi. I'm going to have to search the intarwebz for some recipes. Jerusalem artichoke is a good one, as is jicama. Her MD self says my health is generally not all that bad and I can look forward to thirty or so more years if I quit eating rich foods, drinking too much beer and Scotch and stop smoking my pipe. That brought up the question "Why on earth would I want thirty years without those wonderful things?". She was not amused. I was serious. It's funny how a question about Sterno Stoves can trigger a word dump from me. Garrulous ol' Gerry
Plenty on ebay from a German seller with free postage for less than fifteen quid. Just search for folding sterno stove.
You can quickly fabricate a stand that accomplishes the same purpose. They show up at garage sales for a buck or two for a reason.
I have a sterno stove to use with DIY meth stoves or a Trangia. Using sterno to cook with is only slightly better than letting it warm up in the sun. They sell for about $5 new at Wally World.
Sorry to hear about your health condition Gerry, but I can provide you with a very good recipe for Kohl-rabi (hehe) or kålrabi as we call it in Norway. its a traditional sidedish for a norwegian christmas dinner. might not be exactly what your doctor ordered but its the best you can make with kålrabi Kålrabistappe: Ingredienser (6– 8 porsjoner) 1,5 kg kålrabi 500 g carrot 300 g butter 1 dl cream 1 dl pinnekjøttkraft (broth) 2 slices of lemon 2 sprigs of fresh rosemary 1-2 ts kibbled roasted black pepper peel the kålrabi. peel the carrots. cut it in big chunks 3-5 cm. put it in a big pot of cold water, with the lemon slices (without the stones) and the rosemary on top. let it sit in a cold place over night. pour out the water and refill. keep the lemon and rosemary. boil under lid for 30-40 mins until the kålrabi and the carrots are soft and easy to mash. toss the lemon and rosemary. pour out the water and let the vegetables steam off for a couple of minutes. add the butter, broth and cream. mash it all together. add pepper and salt to taste.
Ian, what kind of dog wizz are you burning in there? Sure doesn't look like an kind of meths I've ever seen! Murph
That looks similar to every trangia with methylated spirit that I've ever seen. Sooty pans are an occupational hazard of using meths here in the UK. Don't know exactly what causes it but in addition to methanol used to make the ethanol tax free, they also add a purple dye and an emetic such as bitrex. It's a real PITA at times because there's sometimes a residue if you use meths to clean something too. I thought it was because the holes in my original trangia were sooted up but all the ones I used with scouts or school have done similar and I recently got a brand new burner and it's pretty much the same. I should really get around to making a penny stove or similar and see if that behaves the same or if the blue flame that we see on all the youtube clips would happen. Something else for my to do list. Regards John
not into Sterno stoves but Kohlrabbi is great, just peel and it eat raw, grows great here in the PNW Jan
