This little brass object came with a Primus 70. It was fitted under the burner - but only by being slipped over the vaporiser. It does not appear to have a function in that position. Can anyone identify what it is?

Indeed, what you have there is a rather rare silent burner adapter for the Primus 70/71. As Redspeedster has concluded, it is missing the top part. DutchMike posted one here: LINK I'm sure you'll be able to get the top for it. Consider yourself lucky!
Aahh, thanks Gary and Lighthouse. I can see now how it works. Any ideas where I can get the cap for the top, or will I have to craft one? Does anyone know what the Part Number is for this little part?
The part No. is 4200 for the steel version (top), yours looks like the brass option. Comparing sizes to the standard and much more common silent damper of the model 100's (bottom). It fits many different stoves, including the Optimus 80, 96, 99, 8, 8r, Radius 20, 46, Primus 70/71, 96/97, etc etc. I doubt Basecamp would sell them, but you never know. I have not seen them listed in any of the Primus reference material/catalogues/etc on CCS.
Hi The top is a silent damper for a Primus 96 or 97. Usually the top is locked to the base. It works fine on the 96 and 97. Whilst it fits the petrol stoves I have not tried it on them so cannot comment on how well it works. I think they were made in the 1930s. The patent mentioned refers to the metal not the design. From memory I think it fits better on the Primus burner head but still fit the Optimus stoves as well The lower one is an early silent cap. I am not certain what models it was made for. Regards Bryan

The larger damper, No. 4005, are for Primus 100 and other stove models that use that type of burner. As for the numbering on the steel caps, given that those similarly marked (No. 4205, 4209, etc) are also their Part No in the catalogues, I'd assume the same for these smaller steel dampers. Catalogue reference 1952 Condrup .
On a related matter, what is the aperture of the hole in the vaporiser nipple? Are they easily available?
