Testing Svea123 against Juwel 33.

    Thank you all for the inputs. Without them I would probably just put the Svea back in the box I found it in. I believed I had checked it thoroughly enough as it was.

    I am really happy I joined you here at Classic Camp Stoves. It has cut many corners of my fettling already :)

    One bit of comment on this statement above.
    I believe, and could be wrong, that science has shown the aluminum scares that were published in the last decade have proven to be untrue. Uncoated aluminum apparently does leach small amounts of metal into foods, mostly acidic foods, but the daily amounts borne into the body that way are substantially below what is considered safe by the FDA here in the US. And, the original connection by a small number of studies between aluminum cookware and Alzheimers seems to have been shown to be seriously in question.

    There can also be issues with stainless steel, too, of course. The two articles below may serve as a starting point for further research.

    Anodized aluminum, aka hard anodized aluminum, is less “hazardous” than either stainless or uncoated aluminum. It is also harder, almost as hard as steel, and has a somewhat non-stick characteristic. Aluminum is lighter than stainless steel and only very slightly heavier than titanium.

    In addition, aluminum is a far better conductor of heat than either stainless steel or titanium, thus, your cooking in the field will suffer less from burned spots on the inside of the bottom of pans when the pans are of aluminum. This is because the heat conductivity of aluminum tends to spread the heat from a flame quickly throughout the pan, whereas stainless steel and titanium tend to hold the heat in one area and cause burning in those spots due to both of those materials poor thermal conductivity.

    Hard anodized aluminum seems to be a good choice for use in the field. I’ve personally found it to be great stuff on my adventures. Others may have different opinions.

    For all those afraid of aluminium remember most municipal water supplies use an aluminium salt as a clarifier. That means if the water is cloudy they clean it with aluminium. If your water is taken from a river you can bet it started cloudy every time it rains.

    i am glad you're here. thanks for sharing your posts of some very nice stoves.
    CONGRATS !! you REALLY improved performance on the SVEA123.
    You WERE a Juwel guy but the lil SVEA is winning you over. As of right now it's hotter and you hadn't mentioned but it may have better control and simmer too.
    Now you see those Juwels almost had you fooled, they're just no good, I can PT you my address and you can send them along to me. hehehe
    If stats were side by side I expect #'s would tilt to the SVEA123. i had asked re: fuel capacity and operational capacity, numbers would be great but if you just look at them, which do you think has a greater fuel capacity?

    Yeah the Svea has really charmed me. I believe it has a little bigger fuel capacity than the Juwel. Last but not least it`s non-corrosive outta brass, that makes it a lot easier to maintain :)

    Nothing bad said about the old Juwel of mine, imagine how many liters of water it have heated over the years from the 30`s and untill now :D
    Still it`s performing as new, only changed gaskets and painted it with Panzergreu to prevent rust. This particular Juwel was painted in panzergreu originally, but i have others painted in green to :)

    Latest uppdate on the Svea...I put some stove window gasket/ Glassrope around the vaporiserstem to suck up the alcohol. I read about it in here someplace, it`s very effective indeed i recomend it.
    Now i can use alot more alcohol in one preheat when cold, no spill and flame where it`s most needed :)

    The Juwel 33 came out marginally better, than the Svea 123R.
    1 Litre of water measured, air and water temperature the same - 14.5C*
    Running on bog standard petrol - no designer fuels ( Coleman )

    Nice old Juwel :) I don't have the Svea 123 R model, mine is the old type 123. I also use petrol for lawn mower. May the difference between old and Svea affect the effect?

    self pressurising stoves are very sensitive to the amount of heat the tank gets. I see the Jewel has no heat shield between the burner and tank. This could be the reason for the slightly better performance although it will also make the stove more prone to overheating. The only times Ive ever seen one overheat though is when they are being truly abused.

    The heat shield, everybody keeps banging on about,on the 123's, is no more than a strengthener, giving rigidity to the frame - without it, it flexes something rotten, and also acts as a storage/pack away for the pot handle and wrench.

    any disc between the flame and tank will act act as a shield whether by design or not
