congrats doc . just boiled a pint on sweet tin burner.. as fast as a trangia...with simmer control pics posted in due course... have a great evening ... nick
I have a stove that is very similar to your trapper.., it's called the " small fry stove " by Retec. The base ,or fuel resevoir is filled with some sort of porous white material that I assume absorbs the alcohol ( I have never lit this stove) At the bottom of the stove is a rubber stopper that is cut like a wedge to control airflow , like a damper
morning doc, morning all , wayyyyyyyyheyyyyyyyy the sweety works @ 2000 last night ...had secured the chimney with a few spots before running out of solder .. not to be deterred & being very much " on one" .....out comes the silicone ... silicone is good for heat ...... up to a point . that point was reached pretty rapidly & the white fluffy debris is exorcised silicone sealant ... have re soldered the chimney this morning .. as can probably be seen in pics the annulus was part filled with rockwool ( garden center ..used for rooting cuttings ) & an air ducting top plate fabricated .. ok ok bent roughly from an aluminium pie tray .. 1 2 3 Rooting cubes in annulus .. from floor to roof .. gaps radially between the rockwool 4 White fluff is very burned silicone sealant 5 Together & ready for further evaluation ...the ally around chimney takes on a "I've been hot" patina. Lovely gold colour. Will play(serious quantified exploration ) with differing rockwool fill volumes /densities, different volumes of meths etc ... all scientific stuff you know!! ... But to press :- the sweety raises a pint to the boil faster than I've ever achieved with any style of "Trangia burner".. @ 6:30 mins .... the best(many tests ) I've managed on a Trangia has been 7:30 ... your figures may vary but these are consistent . Conclusions ... this area is worth pursuing. Anybody following these lines I would suggest making chimney of smaller diameter .. Existing 36mm dia proposed 28 mm _+ dia .. figuring a greater gas velocity ... yeah yeah that should give a bigger flame Will post more as & when .. but now need to tidy the workshop ... ok ..I cant move in my living room for strewn bits of alky stove later nick
Good job Don't use silicone....too hot.. idea what about plumber bog ,foropee or what ever they call it. Still I think solder would be best. Hope mine works out when I start on it. seen one of them small fry stoves on ebay the other day but bought the 91 purple falme instead. Still time will have me buying more no doubt. Keep pics of stoves I see and some day I may get to buy a few or make a few. cheers bruce
Very impressive work. The thought of building one of these from scratch would never occur to me. Then again, I'd cut myself to ribbons if I tried. The photos and the instructions would make a great sticky in the forum.
Hey, Pete, Great to hear from you! I have one of those Retec stoves, too, and it's identical to yours. Got it this past Summer, on the way back from our Wisconsin job. Haven't fired it up yet, and may not. It's mint, in the box, like yours appears to be, and I will probably keep it that way. Looks to be a neat stove, though! By the way, many, many thanks for all the wonderful well wishes on our anniversary!! Sweet Bride and I drove over to Big Bear Lake, to have dinner in one of our favorite restaurants, The Captain's Anchorage. I've mentioned this place before. It's the one that used to be owned by Andy Devine, aka "Jingles", in the old Western Movies and TV series. Great place, that!! Our temps have dropped quite a bit in the last week, or so, and it was a real pleasure to drive over and back. Even though the trip is only about 30 miles, each way, driving it on a twisty-turny mountain road, makes the drive last an hour, each direction. Beautiful, though, and well worth the effort!! Thanks, again, Lads, for all your kind comments and well wishes!! MUCH appreciated, by both Sweet Bride and me!! Take care, and God Bless! Every Good Wish, Doc Mark
Good Morning, Nick, and All, Nick, you are a treat!! What a cool stove you're making!!! 8) Looks like it will work quite well, and I'm eager to see how it all turns out!! As to your suggestion to make the chimney of a smaller diameter, you're right on the money. The Trapper's chimney is only about: - 28.17mm OD - 25,74mm ID -27.74mm sticking out above the "deck" of the burner. Wish to heck I had more time right now!!! I could take more photos, and take better measurements for you. Just don't have the time to spare to get it all setup and done. As soon as I can, I will, though! Until then, outstanding job, Nick!!! Take care, and God Bless! Every Good Wish, Doc Mark
hi doc .ho all, really dont push yerself doc ...i reckon ive got the base principles sussed & im working on a few other diverse projects .. ill probably ..pre excuse the bad one ...put it on a back burner for a day or two ... already impressed with the ...this could be a new one ..the turbobility of the sweety ... its more blow out proof than a medium pressure stove .. && && && he he he ... ho ho ho the more you blow.... a la trangia ... the louder it gets thanks again for the "trigger" to the present metho madness havnt time to get too involved this weekend & ive run out of meths ...1000 ml over last 4 days .... this is getting out of hand barra ..... this is the principle ( alcohol in rock wool/fireproof absorbant ) to electrofannyfy ..reckon you could easily do 100ml in a very short time ...it wouldnt be cheap heat ..but wtf .. youve got to push the boat out once in a while..... metho jet ... boat 8) oh no its getting worse. gone bed nick
Thanks "nipples" and "Pete" "Doc" Just sweeting on the arrival of the '91 Then I can do some measurements and hunt out a siutable container, pipe etc Have use rookwool before its not bad either. Got some Aluninium "welding rods" more like soulder really from a show where they were welding coke cans with it. May have to break them out. Keeping a note book with me on this one so I can jot down a few ideas as they happen. It's just a thought to turbo charge it up at the moment but probably WILL make a doo dad for it so as when I hear the "how longs tha'll take to boil using one of those metho stove things they take forever" I can whip it out or turn it on and shut them up!!! I think you are on the right track there. Just take it a bit slower and things will work out just fine I'm sure. Bruce Can't spend what you ain't got Can't miss what you never had.
It would be quicker to fetch it in yer barra Bruce , Mine arrived OK, as others have said, Leigh Marsden is a pleasure to deal with. He did tell me that the 111 may be making a come back but with a Nova burner.
Barra is a fish Barramundi. Not a garden barrow. but if I took the barrow I'd have to have a long snorkel to push it all the way over there to fetch it. Know off any stoves that work under water cause I'd get knocked up abit and probably want a cuppa and cook some fish or squid on the way. No use going by plane 'cause the bludders pinch yu' stoves at the airport the theiving mungrel f$#@*%^g ar#@&%s. J.C. is this Marsden fella got a shop or something has he??
yep, it's a warehouse of some sort, I went there a while back when the last of the 8r & 123r stoves were being sold, trouble was that Base camp had taken all the 123's & looking at the 8r it seemed that the quality had dropped a bit.
Yuck Ian ....green snotty stove makes sick just to see to see it. Steel tank to I believe. J.C. I was wondering if you could take a few measurements of the 91for me? The burner base windscreen The inside diameter of the bottom The inside top section and the height form ground to top. So as I can begin finding things that will fit into it. The gap between the pot and the burner base would be handy too. Or you could just sent it to me and I'll do it for you if you like???
Packed, there is a space of 50mm X 140mm, it just takes a fuel bottle from a Swiss army 'Trangia' (250-300ml) & the grip & a lighter. Can't tell you what the consumption is like yet. (over to you Rik) I was going to send it on to you as requested, but unfortunately the post office has just closed
I don't have one and I may well not bother getting one. I borrowed the image from a Japanese site where they were advertised at about ?135.00. Base Camp apparently expect to have them sometime this month at a little short of ?100.00.
I don't think I will go for this incarnation of the 111 either, looks cheap somehow, and for that money you should be able to take your pick of the 'proper' ones
bruce.. 91 dims ... hungry/tired .... barramundi ... top eating fish. Was my Friday supper for a while in kunnunnurra .. related to arowana ....ancient species . Don't use ally for center carby tube ..... it'll go plastic ,,poss melt Have a good un ....keep it blue methonick ..... could make a nice username
