well i am sorry to say i will not be going, we have had a lot of mishap here with a death of a friend along with a neighbors house burning down and money is just not there now, hope all have a good time and maybe on the next get-together, dave
Hi, Dave, I have been out of touch for the last week, but was sad to find this note from you, and offer sincere condolences on the death of your friend, and the loss of a neighbor's home!! We will offer up some prayers for all those who are having to deal with these sad circumstances. Please do not worry about sending anything for the campsite payment, as we always split that fee with those who actually attend the event. Greetings, All, Been out of touch for a week, or so, but wanted to post an update about our event next week. Though we're experiencing super high winds right now, the forecast for JTNP is for light winds, and very lovely days and nights!! Should be great weather for our CASG #8! For those that cannot join us, tons of photos will be taken, as usual, and posted here for your enjoyment. For that will do plan to attend, we'll see you next week!! Looking at The Weather Channel 10 day forecast, it looks like next week in Indio (near Joshua tree) will be into the low 90s to almost 100 during most of the week with it getting hotter on the weekend. High 60s to low 70s at night with light (5mph) winds. Not mentioned is that it will be extremly dry, very low humidity, and it will take a toll on you, so drink up, a lot, even if you don't feel like it. So bring shade, bring more water than you think you will need and maybe some light coats for evening. Sunscreen and lip balm during the day, or else Doc may try out some 18th century "cures" on your hide. A good trick is to freeze a gallon jug of water and use it in your ice chest for cooling and water. More ice is better. Note, Cottonwood campground is supposed to have water, don't know the quality. My contribution for Saturday Pot Luck will be grilled Lemon Pepper Chicken, maybe marinated. This is the lazy chefs way to make chicken but always good so far. All yah need is a bottle of Lemon Pepper salt and maybe some "made from the packet" Italian dressing as the marinade. I'm going to see if I can travel light this time. I usually bring too much junk that I don't use, but have to spend time packing and moving around. See yah next week. Jim Henderson

Evening, Terry, and All, Outstanding!!! We always bring more water than we need, just to be safe. But, as Cottonwood Campground has water available, that should not be a problem. Bring sunscreen, and a good sun hat. We'll have our canvas fly setup, as usual, and will be bringing two chairs for you and your lovely wife, Terry. I believe our campsite will have several picnic tables, covered with a metal roof, but anyone else is welcome to join us under the canvas, as long as they bring their own chairs. If the metal roof works OK, that may well be our regular fettling spot, and definitely our Pot Luck dinner spot for Saturday night!! We're looking forward to seeing everyone who can make it, and to spending time enjoying the fine company of our regular band of Stove Nutters, and some special guests: Mr. and Mrs. Trojandog!! UPDATE: Greetings, All, Well, guess what? Yesterday, the temps fell, up here in our mountains, it got really foggy, which it still is, and RAINED last night!! This morning, I checked the weather for Joshua Tree, and though the temps have come down a bit in the forecast, it's still going to be lovely, both days and nights!!! WHEW!! Thought for a second there, that we might have a replay of CASG#3, during which we had super high winds, rain, sleet, snow, and very low temperatures!!! YIKES!! See you all tomorrow!! Hi Mark. I'm sending you an email but in case you don't receive it, the bare bones are: Don't worry about camping chairs for us, we have bought two. Currently in Yuma and will now arrive JTNP tomorrow afternoon, not Thursday. Can you bring a corkscrew? I forgot that the US is ten years behind the the UK and still uses corks . Unfortunately, because of my new job, I couldn't come Thursday or Friday. BUT I will be coming tomorrow (Saturday) morning. I look forward to seeing everyone (and all the lovely stoves!!).
It looks like I'll be the first to report back from the CASG #8, since I only drove in for the day. I met a great bunch of people out there in the desert, and had a great time. I learned a lot about some stoves that I'd never met before and shared some of my Coleman stoves. It's nice being a stovie among stovies, lots of the folks I usually hang out with are lantern people who haven't seen the light (or can only seen the light) and only use a few stoves for basic cooking. I didn't stay very late, so I have no idea how these folks planned to light up their campsite, I know Flivver came prepared, but I'd hate to find out that a bunch of them broke out their battery powered LED "lanterns" after I left I don't know if any of these campers have an aversion to having their photos posted, so I'll just show some generic shots of what was there. My photos centered mostly on technical details, and not the big picture, but here are a few: Lots and lots of little tiny stoves... Some new guy didn't get the memo and showed up with a bunch of suitcase stoves...sheesh Flivver's magnificent Clayton & Lambert Deluxe Glamping Range: They seemed pretty sedate during the day, but as I was leaving, I heard the beer cans popping open. Next year I'll try harder to actually camp out instead of just making a day trip. Then I'll find out what they're really up to out there!
It was warm, but not too warm, probably mid 80's. On the way out though, I could see what looked like a cloud of smog over Palm Springs. It turned out that the wind was really blowing hard and the dust and sand were swirling.
