I noticed on the popular auction website that a UK dealer is selling 2 silent burners (Primus is stated) for 12.99GBP. Are these quality burners..ie worth having in your kit? (Im not sure if its kosher to list the name of the company or not...so I will refrain at this point.)

I Have ordered a couple just to find out exactly the same thing, his stuff is usually ok.
He is having some of parts made and some is new old stock [Military I think?]
The silent burners if OK are a good buy at that price, I reckon, so worth a punt, I will let you know!

They may come in handy in the future for a Frankenstove or if the burner on an otherwise good stove is missing or totally ruined.
    Good luck.

Over on my side of the pond parts are hard to come by...and keros often are missing parts....so yeah...to be able to use , and wait to get a more "original" part, it didn't seem that I was breaking the bank to have a couple working parts if needed.

    Cheers

Thanks Dave. Looks like they are selling fast - 6 sets sold in 32 hours, 9 sets left. As the offer is only on for one week, I've ordered a couple myself. It's also free postage in the UK  .

    Morning, Gentlemen,

OK, after seeing these, I decided to be in for a penny, in for a £, and went for a pair of them too!! If these burners are as good as they look, then they are a great deal, especially for a pair of them! I look forward to hearing what Nick and Terry think, as they should have their burners faster than Dave and me, but I am hoping these are going to be outstanding, and thank Dave for the head's up on this auction! Well done, Dave, and thanks to Nick and Terry for enticing me to join in the fun!! ;) 8) :D/ :D Take care, and God Bless!

    Every Good Wish,
    Mark

P.S. Just got a nice note from Julian, the Gentleman offer those burners. Here is what he had to say about them:

"Hi there, the burners are made for the Afican market as they still use the kerosene stoves over there on a daily basis.
They are brass burners with steel inner and outer cap, the deal is really good as it normaly cost more than this for 2 caps and 2 inner caps.
Many thanks for the purchase and I hope you will be pleased with them.
    Regards
    Julian"

Sounds great to me, as the quality looks to be excellent! I'm guessing Portugal-made, with either Patria, or Hipolito ancestors. I have burners from both companies, and have found them excellent!

Hi, I joined the stampede, but decided to purchase the Petromax silent burners rather than the so-called Primus ones.

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/261564016077?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

These burners have their caps marked up as Petromax, rather than being blank or having an Indian brand.

I believe that the Hipolito factory in Portugal manufactured Petromax products under license in the 1980s/90s so it is possible the burners were made there.
I rate the Hipolito products quite highly, particularly their No.00 stove so I am hopeful of good quality in these particular burners.
    I will keep you informed.

    Best Regards,
    Kerophile.

Forgive the following stupid question but will the petromax burner fit in an optimus or primus stove?

Hi lamafat, Yes, I believe so. These ones appear to be suitable for 1.75 and 2 pint models.
You can always ask the seller the question.
    Best Regards,
    Kerophile.

The gentleman I've had contact with in India at Palam stove industries says a good portion of their business is Africa and the Middle East. The quality seems OK, but I don't know if there is a distributor in your area.

Link to the Petromax burners Kerophile had posted (original link is dead?): http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/261564016077

I've ordered some items from ebayer Rick-p. (NRV, jets, etc) and they've all been good quality. Fast service and excellent communication, no problems. I haven't any of his Petromax burners but they should fit the domestic stoves you speak of. As Kerophile stated you can ask him to be sure.

Anybody know if Mike at Basecamp is on vacation? Haven't heard from him on a pending order for over 3 weeks...

Hi, Lightning fast service. Ordered yesterday afternoon, dispatched almost immediately, and delivered by the Post Office, to my home in the far North of Scotland, 1315h today.
The Petromax silent burners are as in the Ad. photos and seem new and of good quality.
    Best Regards,
    Kerophile.

His NRV's each included lead washers + contained the PIP-holding brass cups, which imo are far better (and easier to manage) than the molded PIP types (with no brass cup).

He posted that Basecamp will be closed whilst he is attending the Great Dorset Steam Fair. Look here:

He will be back after the 31st of August, if I read that correctly. Hope that helps, and God Bless!

P.S. Just checked the date that Mike posted that notice, and it was not in August, but earlier in the year. So, I may well be completely off..... Sorry about that.

    Hi Doc,

No worries and thanks, I'll continue to be patient and hope he responds at some point. Both parts I'm interested in are not listed on his site (there is no listed part No. for them) but he has inventory of each.

    Good Morning, Gentlemen,

I've been contemplating the sudden offering of what appear to be quality silent burners recently. I've ordered a pair of them from Julian Shaw, as have others here, and Kerophile ordered a pair of similar burners, outer caps marked "Petromax", from Rick, in the UK. Now, 111T has posted a photo of another burner that looks very close to the others being offered, and he posted that it comes from India.

I am guessing that all of these burners are coming from a single manufacturer, and if it's not Portugal, then I believe it is very probably India, though, of course, I could be absolutely wrong about that.

Be that as it may, I just compared silent burners from Optimus, Primus, Hipolito, and Patria, and found them to be very close in quality, with only very minor differences. My guess is that the "Petromax" burners that George received, are made by the same company that is making the others that some of us are receiving, with the difference being that Kerophile's are supplied with a Petromax outer cap.

I would LOVE to see all these burners, together, with photos taken of them all, as a comparison measure. I am thinking of ordering one of the burners from Rick, so I can do that very thing. Or, if someone else out there already HAS burners from all the currently being offered sources, maybe they can take comparison photos.

Now, don't get me wrong in this, as I don't really CARE about which manufacturer is making these burners, as long as the quality is top notch, and the burners function as well as their Swedish ancestors. In fact, I very much hope that this might turn out to be the case, as we all would benefit from being able to source such a quality silent burner for our beloved stoves!!! What say you, Gentlemen? Any one want to undertake the comparison of all these burners from the different sources? I will probably order a burner from Rick, just to cover that base, so when all of them arrive, I will take comparison photos, too, including the burners from Sweden and Portugal. Food for thought, eh? Thanks for reading my comments, and I look forward to hearing what you all think about this. Take care, and God Bless!

    Every Good Wish,
    Doc Mark

Update: Burner from Rick purchased, so I'll see how all the burners compare, when all of mine arrive. I already have an India-made burner, on a Prabhat stove, which I can use in this comparison. Or, if 111T would kindly lend me his, I will use it in the photos, and return it to him immediately after photographing it. Either way, this should prove interesting!

    HI, 111T,

Thanks for the info. I'll have to check and see what the tariff is on those, and maybe score one. I've gone a bit off the wagon, however, and bought a few stoves, some burners, and other associated bits, lately, and I may wait just a bit, until my CC cools off, before buying that burner from A&H. Need to call Shirlene again soon, anyway, as we've not talked in a while. Thanks, again, and God Bless!

    Every Good Wish,
    Doc
