My first three legged stove! A Primus 96, compliments of a fellow member here. What a cute little bugger! I'm excited!
HEY!! That's not fair, I searched for years until I found one. On the other hand, congratulations, you're gonna love it, they are wonderful little stoves. Mine did come in an excellent condition tin with all the goodies, including the spirit tin, spanner, packet of prickers and the wind screen. Most of the factory lacquer was there as well. The fount was half full of kerosene, the fill cap gasket was in good order and the stove fired up and ran like new after two or three minutes of lovely green flame tips that morphed to yellow, then disappeared. Thanks, Gerry, from a former Snohomish resident, now living in Montana since June. I look forward to learning this stove and getting her tuned up. I know the lipstick burner is not from a 96 so I will be on the hunt for one of those for sure. I'll have plenty of questions as I go along...just be prepared. Lonnie
First off, congrats. Looking at the leg design and pump rod handle you've found an early model 96. What are your concerns with the vaporizer? Can't see from the pic anything significant. I'd be happy if the jet was tight and flame blows blue and true. AR
Don't get me wrong, I'm not unhappy with it at all. The lipstick is a two piece design where the nut can slide off. From what I understand, Primus didn't make those. I would just like to find an original some day. As to the age, there are no markings that I can see on the bottom but one foot has a six digit number ending in 61. I thought that meant 1961. I'll be trying to fire it up as soon as I get some kerosene!
Morning, Lonnie, The 96 family is one of the most favorites of CCS Stovies, world-wide!!! Yours is, indeed, from 1961, and you figured out the date coding correctly, for that type version of this venerable stove. I'd appreciate seeing a photo of your lipstick burner, as I'm not sure, exactly, what you are describing. Could you share a photo which shows the removable nut to which you are referring? Make sure you replace the fuel cap gasket (I do that with every stove I find, just as a matter of course), and check your NRV pip, to make sure it's nice and soft, and doesn't leak on you. Better to do those things now, before you get kerosene in this little stove. Well done on scoring your little Primus 96....and your SVEA 123.... and your SVEA 123R!!! Oh, BOY!! Photos forthcoming, Doc. I will definitely replace the fuel cap gasket. I've also seen a couple kits in the fettlebox and on ebay that contain several washers and other parts but Im not quite sure yet which one to buy. About the nrv...it looks like I'll need a special tool to remove it?

Morning, Lonnie, Yep, that's the kit. All those parts will be used, too, and the quality of that kit is excellent. As for the NRV, yes, you are going to need a special tool to remove it. If it were me, I'd wait for Stu to get through his back-log, then order one of his outstanding NRV tools. Get both the small one, and the larger one, 'cause, at your rate of stove acquisition, you're going to need them both, soon enough!! If you want, you can send your tank to me, and I'll remove the NRV and fettle it for you, once you get your kit from Ross. But, in truth, it would be better for you to learn this very useful skill by doing this yourself. Your choice, of course. Speaking of NRV tools, I have a ton of them, and interestingly enough, though I use Stu's outstanding wrenches more than any other, there is still that oddball time when one, or the other of those other wrenches still come into play. But, if I could only have two NRV wrenches, of the "T" type, they would be from Stu!!
