Hi Peter I saw that - or something similar - on ebay and wondered what it might be a component part of. On its own it wouldn't cope with a large enough flow of water to give a decent output from an instantaneous hot water heater, unless working in parallel with more of the same? Or, reverse logic here, and it's part of a distillation plant (alcohol 'still')? John
I've had a look in the Ultimheat online catalogue of stoves and heating appliances going back to the 19th century and a search for Gamo throws up a trace in a trade directory from 1934 as a manufacturer of water heaters. Gamo, 66 Rue Saint Sabin, Paris. I appreciate of course that your experiment was to illustrate the efficiency of those coils, Peter, and wasn't a suggestion that it would be used to heat water necessarily but it looks probable it was intended to be used to do that after all and not as a heat exchanger 'the other way round'.
