8R case hinge replacement

Hi folks,

I got this ratty looking nickel plated 8R from eBay, and am planning to do what I can with it. I'm not hugely familiar with the 8R cases, but I'm guessing that the hinge here has been replaced by a previous owner.

I was planning to drill out the (copper?) rivets, put the case through electrolysis to remove the rust, replace the hinge somehow (hopefully lining it up a little better than it is currently) and respray.

I'm considering bonding the same hinge back on with JB weld, or getting a bit of mild steel piano hinge and welding that on instead.










Any advice on how best to replace the hinge would be appreciated.

You seem to have as good of ideas as anyone.

It appears someone got a lot of real use out of that stove -- I like that.

 

Or they didn't use it at all and let it rot.
It may a good candidate for putting in a Trangia setup.

Does that say 8 not 8R on the case?

It didn't regrow that hinge sitting in a shed.

 

Yeah, I just meant the rot, you are right someone took the time to replace the hinge for some reason.

Certainly there's a needle in there, which makes it an 8R in my book. My understanding (from perusing the site) is that there was an overlap between models, where 8R stoves were put into the remaining 8 cases.

Just what it sounds like!

There are a couple other people that have done this before. This take's some substantial modifications, but it's a FANTASTIC stove!!! I like it better than the conventional 8R, and I think I might even like it more than my Trangia Multifuels! 8-[

Gary modified the 8R burner for me to accept a Primus fuel line, and to bolt into a Trangia adapter. (Thanks Gary!!!!!) Ken got wind of the project and ever so kindly gifted a Trangia 27 windscreen set-up. (Thanks Ken!!!!!) Luckily I have some titanium pots that fit perfectly to complete the set.

A million projects going, but I'll take some more in-depth pics later this week and post them in another thread.

Oooh, that does look interesting. I'm going to try to fix the hinges first, but that looks like a cool thing to try. Here's a pic of the work in progress. I've drilled out the rivets and the case is now in the electrolysis tank.......

 

I can already tell that that is going to be one serious transformation by the end.

 

Does anyone happen to have a pair of calipers and an 8R case to hand, who could tell me the thickness of the case material? I meant to measure mine before I left for work but forgot
