Hello I need some expert advice about this old Shipmate stove/oven. What fuel would be best in it? Were is the tank usually located? And what do you think of this brand and type of stove and it's reliability as I will be using it on my sailboat to replace my Punker, 2 burner. Picture to follow- Thanks Ted #C753GM
Looks quite much that stove uses Optimus 207 burner (and Optimus control knobs.) So most probably it's a kerosene stove. Also kerosene is more safe in boat cabins so gasoline is not generally used in boat stoves (exceptions can be...) Follow the tubes from the burners and you will find the tank or the place where the tank should be. Here you can Optimus 155 that is their 2 burner boat stove without oven: https://classiccampstoves.com/threads/ Shipmate looks an enhanced version of it. Maybe Shipmate uses Optimus tank also? Just search (on this site or some search engine) "Optimus 155", "optimus regulated burner" and/or "207 burner". That will give information for you to restore the stove and get it running. Richmond ring stoves used a remote tank. One or two gallon usually located in a sail locker or lazzeret then plumbed with copper tube to the stove. Pumped up to 18-27psi with a bicycle pump. 4-tube 207 burners kerosene, single riser 209 burners alcohol. My only problem with the setup is with the oven. The flame is in the oven and if it is not a clean flame, than the food could take on a kerosene taste. Keep the flame low because the oven heats really fast.
Burner in oven looks to have quite tight space so air flow to burner is maybe not the best that it could be so it is not burning clean. Even with normal (e.g. Primus 5) stove (large) pot will restrict air flow and exhaust fumes start to smell. I have noticed these symptoms with various stoves when I use them in a tent.
Hello So thanks one and all ! Looks like most feel it is kerosene and the tank is missing - Perhaps it should be connected to the pipe in the last pic-? Does this model number make any sense. #C753GM Plus generally I am not detecting a lot of positive reveiws of the brand or the design of this unit. Could it be a real clunker? Thanks Ted
The part # means third quarter (C), 1975(75), three burner(3), galley master(GM). Air for the oven burner come from underneath the oven. These stoves are usually fitted for gimbals, so fuel feed tube needs to be fixed in place so as not to flex when swinging. I've not had any issue with the stove make over the years except that they are made of steel. And as anyone knows steel rusts on a boat. Use a rust preventer (LPS #3)on any chips you see and you'll get many years use from the stove.
This alcohol tank from a tug boat is currently up for auction on eBay. It looks pretty heavy duty and might work well with your shipmate stove. Here's an example of an installation of a similar type tank. The fuel filter is a nice touch I think.
