found this today at a booty!
under all that grime is a Helios No5.
Trivet caught my attention then I spotted the external NRV.
the engraving was so dirty that I had to wet the grime to read them.

    Hello Nick

Click here and scroll down to Australia.

I have no idea of the date, but with an external NRV it must be very early.

    Thanks Doc and Trevor

The tank is marked made in Sweden so was Helios an Australian importer?

That external Nrv nut is very very similar to a Svea one any connection?

    That's the first time
I have see the chart in the link what's it for? Derrrr!

    Nick

    Hello again Nick

When you have it cleaned up and show us lots more photos it should be possible to compare it with Swedish made stoves.

By the way, I love the trivet! :D

Great find Nick. I'm looking forward to seeing your follow-up report on what you find under the grime.

Hi, I'll stick my neck out and say that a Swedish made stove of this style, with external access NRV, Filler cap with "Mickey Mouse" Ears, and such a cast iron trivet, would have been made pre 1920.

    Best Regards,
    Kerophile.

    Thanks for the interest gents.

I will post a progress report and photos as I go so watch this space!

I was guessing probably pre 1930 because of the nrv.but let's see if anything else emerges.

    Cheers Nick

    I will agree with Kerophile.
My first thoughts were pre 1920s.

    Hi all,

SVEA was the manufacturer of the "Trois Etoilles" stoves, sold by the Standard Oil Co (later known as ESSO). SVEAs N°15 stoves (basically a cheaper model N°5 using thinner brass for the founts >!!stress cracks!!< ) was made with the outer nrv 'till the 1930s. I would not be surprised this stove was also made by SVEA. The SVEA and Trois Etoilles I have, have the typical big flat bottoms on their legs, this stove has 'normal' feet. I don't know when SVEA started to use the big feeters, that might give a clue as to age (if all other findings tell us this stove was actually made by SVEA, so far this is only my guess).

    All the best,

    Wim

    Thanks for that Wim
I have a big foot Svea and the leg bends below the bottom seam on both stoves are very similar as well as the NRV cover nuts.

At present as far as the dirt allows, I cannot see any more engraving on the tank.

With it being Mother's Day today stoving has had to take a back seat to pampering the missus if life is to be worth living so no progress to report.

Thanks for all of the input.m
    Cheers Nick

I have made a very modest start today and discovered that the outer cap is inscribed:-

    Made in
    Rising sun ( image)
    Coleman
    Canada

    With 4 rows of holes

    So not original.
The stove has been dismantled and the tank has had a degrease and wash prior to trying to get all of the thick grime and what looks like paint off with a citric acid and wallpaper paste mix.
The small parts will be cleaned using an ultra sonic cleaner.

That outer cap is a rare find as the stove is. Great work!

The "Rising Sun" is Coleman's "Sunshine of the Night" trademark and was once included on most everything they made as a stamping, sticker or decalcomania transfer.

The burner is probably from a Colman Solus stove.

Thanks for that additional info gents.

I have run out of citric acid crystals and other projects such as restoring a Herbert Terry anglepoise lamp, a Yamaha fj1100 fettle and helping my son do up and sell a Gilera Cougar motor bike as well as elderly relative falling ill keep and life in general keep diverting my attention.

    Hence the slow progress!

Believe it or not I have not got so much money earning work on at the moment so I cannot blame that, I did not believe elderly relatives when they said they have never been so busy as after they retired. Now I know what they meant
Unfortunately a traditional retirement will not be on the cards for me however!

Sadly after some 2 hours cleaning I have found a couple of small stress fractures in the tank near small dents! So I have called a halt to proceedings!

If anyone would like this stove for the cost of postage plus say £10 as a shelf queen please get in contact.all the bits are there apart from washers etc.basic cleaning is done.

'I will not be including the cast iron pan ring in this offer.

    Cheers Nick
