    Orchid,

I'd look on Craigslist, Seattle would be best, then the smaller cities. 400's and 422's are often there in quantity, some for peanuts. Also, shipping from the US to Canada is not too expensive.

When I want to make a long distance purchase I offer $10 over the asking price to pay for shipping.

I've gotten some very nice stoves that way.

I'm with Brian on getting a 502, bigger base, so not a "tippy" stove, more fuel, so no worries as to carrying extra for most jaunts.

No bits that fold in or out, or break, and field repairable, not like you'll ever have to fix it!

And as to simmer control, IMO, nothing beats it on that accord! I built in a spark lighter on mine here, makes it like lighting the kitchen stove at home.

Hi all! Sorry for the delay. After some unsuccessful tinkering with my other stove, I caved in and just bought a cool Coleman 400, used but in nice condition and fires up nicely and came with a nice bag and original manual/inserts. Fits my Sigg Tourist cook kit nicely too!

Nice! I too recently bought a brown 400 quite cheap on eBay. I cleaned it up and it is a beautiful and easy to use stove. Quite heavy to backpack, but as you said, that didn't matter to you. I'll probably grab my Trangia for my next backpack this weekend, just got a 25-8. It should work well for my brother and I on this trip.

The brown Coleman Peak 1 400-499 is a superb stove. I bought mine new in 1984 for NZ$100, and it is still going well. I have replaced the pump cup, and the cap seal, and that is it. Lots of power, starts easily, and simmers well too. I have a green Easilite 505A, which is very similar in function, but looks a bit different.

The Coleman is a good stove but you can go lighter for back packing. I suggest a Svea, very small, packs a punch, a 123 or 123R. They can be had reasonably priced. The best for back packing is the Trangier metho but it's not a brassey and doesn't quite have that bling.

    PS welcome to the forum

    Cheers
