This is my friend Andy's stove that he has just refurbed. Its running on unleaded. Any idea what the problem is please? http://s142.photobucket.com/user/stevemed/media/Optimus_1.mp4.html
I wondered about that. I've suggested he just change the jet first off to see if it will make a difference.
Hi, does you stove have the correct flame ring in position? I have found that Op. 111B stoves will not run properly without a proper flame ring. http://www.base-camp.co.uk/exploded views/Optimus/111 Hike.htm They are also very fussy about jet aperture. https://classiccampstoves.com/posts/87293 Best Regards, Kerophile.
A jet not quite screwed in tight enough, short of stripping the threads, causes flare and disrupts combustion. Kerophile's on track with the flame ring query too. John
My understanding is many in North America use RUG in the 111Bs. From what I have been told, its down to the difference in price between White gas and RUG. I bought a 111B out of the US and it arrived stinking of old gas...really nasty smell. Took quite a bit to get all the deposits out of the burner. Dave
Was that stove primed properly? That is what happens when raw fuel is squirting from the jet. Plus it appears to be getting a little better as it heats up. Unleaded should be ok, not great but ok.
Could also be water in the fuel cooling and steam quenching the flame. I would first try drain, flush and fill with known good new/fresh/correct fuel. If the trouble persists install a new jet Best of luck, AR
Some stoves have a hard time burning RUG to a brilliant blue. I've tried it on brand new stoves and older ones made for leaded gasoline (KampKook LCS models with new generators, Coleman Model 424 dual fuel) and have not had great results, good results, but not great. There's always at least a slight yellow tinge in the flame OR the flame is completely yellow and/or there's a small plume of smoke rising from the burner. When I switch to white gas/Coleman Fuel, they burn nice and blue. Your mileage may vary. It's the additives. They are hard to burn and are toxic: Unleaded Fuel and Additives My best experience has been the Coleman dual fuel lanterns on RUG. They burn bright with no problems or yellow. Don't ask me why. sam
It looks to me like there is no flame spreader in place. Is there one installed? If not, could that be your problem?
Its a roarer non lipstick burner so the flame spreader is built in....its just really sooty looking so it kinda gets lost...
Many thanks for all the suggestions. Its burning better now but still on unleaded. http://s142.photobucket.com/user/stevemed/media/111Bworks.mp4.html The main culprit looks to have been some water in the fuel as anlrolfe suggested. Jet was also cleaned again and flame spreader adjusted slightly. Obviously some Coleman fuel may improve things still.
