Tucked away in the August 2015 issue of Outside Magazine at page 79 under the heading of "stove, portable" is an interesting bit about the origins of the MSR Model 9 stove. I suspect that the article is available on-line if you are not a subscriber to the magazine itself. The entry is worth a minute or two of your time if only to get a sense of the goals that the inventor of the Model 9 was trying to achieve. No mention of classic camp stoves whatsoever. But, then again, keep in mind that the publication is Outside Magazine [to which I have subscribe since 1976] which means [I think] that its target market is probably not geared towards late 50ish folk like me. Thus endeth my first post on the new forum! Now to figure out how to post . . . .
Couldn't find it. Best I could do was find this Outside article from May 2012 that mentions the Model 9 in passing and the Whisperlite. http://www.outsideonline.com/1928656/most-influential-gear-all-time HJ

Hey, Nick, Many thanks for sending the OP my way. I was astounded at the stuff you linked, from me!! I have a firm timeline for most of the older MSR stoves, just have never sat down to post it here. I do need to do that, however. In any case, I'm looking forward to seeing if the Outside article got it right, or....... I'll have to pick up that issue, as SB and I let our subscription lapse many years ago, when OS was publishing very thin articles, and far more advertising. I'll post an opinion, after I've read the article, and I HOPE is was written by someone who knows his/her stuff, and not just some online hack, who lives and dies by the "importance" of his/her own blog, and really knows very little in-depth information. Thanks for the head's up about the article! Take care, and God Bless! Every Good Wish, Doc
He He Ho Ho.... i can 1/2 drive the new ccs..i'll work on posting pics when needed.. 1/2 knew that DocM had an interest in early msr ... viva ccs . nick
Now that I have your attention, HERE is a nice flame shot from my MSR #9 stove, taken at CASG7, at Joshua Tree National Park. This stove is my flat-out most favorite MSR stove, and it seems far more powerful than any of it's later incarnations. Though I love ALL of the MSR X-GK family members, this "Abraham" of that family is by far my more cherished!! For what it's worth...... Take care, and God Bless! Every Good Wish, Doc P.S. My #9 came with it's original white pump, and also the very first replacement pump, which was sent out to replace that original pump.
I'll have to buy that issue. But I would bet they got it wrong. Ken in NC I'll have to light my 9 when I get home. I have an 'in the box' MF awaiting me too.
