Hi All, I've seen the Optimus mini and camping oven for sale and also read that gas is the best fuel to use as a spirit fuel stove might taint the food (wow the family would hate that!). I'd appreciate anyone's experiences of using a spirit stove with the Optimus oven. I much prefer cooking outside using pots, pans and skillets but never tried slow cooking with an oven. I use an Optimus Svea 123, No.00 and as soon as the washer kit arrives from the Fettlebox a 1939 Primus No.5. Cheers Martin
Hi Martin With a well-fettled paraffin stove having a jet that's not enlarged and overfuelling my experience is that there's absolutely no fuel taint. I can't see a problem with a spirit stove either - but would avoid using methanol fuel. I've used this similar oven ... air warden's helmet oven and Coleman collapsibles. John
my wallet wont run to meths for anything other than pop can type stove lightweight water boilers or use as a prime for keroffin stoves ....oven baking requires high heat for a long duration .. like driving a gas guzzling low efficiency 4x4 in the city... i simply cant afford it.... saving up the coppers £ $ to make a still would in my case make more sence. all the oven/stove camping meals ive had ,have been paraffin or coleman fuel (panel wipe/aspen 4t ) cooked . all tasting same as 'homecooked'. gas or electric powered oven. no fuel taint ..yummy.y.m.m.v. nick
Thanks All, I was thinking of an oven as something I could use for roasting and cassoulet type cooking rather than baking application, though Redspeedster seems to have some intriguing contraptions! I'd like to know more about those. Bon appetite mon frères Martin
I baked cookies once with a Coleman oven on top of a 425 Coleman stove out on the campsite. I remember running out of white gas so I used some of the nasty stuff I had in a red plastic jug. I was the guinea pig first to taste the cookies to see if was ok. Well they were fine..and the kids loved them. I wouldn't use auto gas again but it's good to know that it didn't effect the stove or the food if you use it in a pinch.
