I find those wind screens I've seen in the clone 8R's pretty fascinating. So I decided to make one. I had a paint stripping tin in the garage. It was a rectangular shape the perfect width of an 8R case. I simply used a can opener and cut out the bottom. Discarded it and used a pair of tin snips and cut the tin in half. Then I cut the two halves down to the proper hight of the stove case. Cut another small piece and used six pop rivets to hold it in place along the back side. I think it turned out half decent considering there was no measuring or planning just winged it, on a boring cold afternoon.
Hey, alnl1996, That's a bang-up job you did, Sir! Have you tried it, yet? If so, any problems with the tank getting hotter than usual? Your fit is wonderful, and it's amazing that you did not make any measurements. I look forward to hearing how it works, and if it causes any over-heating problems. Thanks Doc. I haven't tested it yet with a pot but I'm sure it'll be fine. I'm not too concerned with overheating. I plan on using it outdoors and I'm running Kerosene in it. The more heat the better. I will report on how it does with a pot on top of it. In the meantime here's a pic of it brewing a cuppa before I tackeled this little project
Good Evening, alnl1996, Excellent shot of your 8R. Kerosene, huh?? I see you've surrounded the burner with a ring of something. Is it steel? I'd guess that would keep the burner hot enough to burn kero, but how about detailing, exactly, how you got your 8R to run so well on kero? Looks great!!! I look forward to seeing how you accomplished that task, as I've bought quite a few almost brand new 8R's, over the years, that I got for between $2-$5, simply because they would not run. The common thread in each? They were all filled with kerosene, and sooted up like there was no tomorrow!! YIKES!! Your stove is not sooty, at all, and looks to be burning kero nicely. Keroffin in an 8R..... even with mini pump ... HOW ? Enquiring minds want to know ....HOW ? With any stove(petrol or paraffin) i'd be more than a little concearned about overheating.....really not' good form' to have a solder joint melt or a pressure release 'pop'......ymmv. Sacrilige I know :-)....Anyone fancy a Paraffin Primus 70/71/80? Nick
I'll get into more detail about the windscreen and this mysterious jet that I have that can burn kero when I get home from work. I did create a post on the Frankie section a little while ago on this burner but it was in one of my other 8R cases (I do that some times ) But I will take some more pics and explain a bit more.
Thanks for the link kerophile. That'sthe top part of the tin I used. Theoretically I could make one more for another one of my 8R's The shield around the stove was made by the previous owner. It's just aluminum, but the skill level in cutting it was second to none. This is the bottom of the burner. I had to use a bench grinder to shave down some of the fins on the Nova. One of the fins actually touches the vaporizer tube. This transfers alot of heat. And lastly. One thing I learned from brass is its a very soft metal and forgiving. Tap the jet once to make the hole smaller. If it closes use a very small piece of wire (in the bag) to open it back up. Experiment until it works.
Nova burner in an Optimus 8 case :-).. oops .. missed that thread. .. wow ,, a super little hot box . I've seen the Nova pump bottle and braided delivery tube coupled to a 8R burner(burning petrol) .. mounted in a trangia 27 ... another little powerhouse. Love it .... The frankie side of stovedom .. mix and match . proper custom job ..keep on mutating Nick .
