Hey guys! I just got myself a juwel 34 for 30 $. It's sweet and cool but it turned out that two parts of the fuel tank haven't been put together well in the factory. Does anyone has ever seen this? Do you think it would be safe to use this stove? Cheers! Chris
My guess would be no. You'd want to strip all the paint off the tank, and get a look at the join, just to be sure. I would not use that stove until I had made sure the seal was capable of withstanding the pressure. But I'm only one man, others may have a better idea. Best of luck with it. Mike.
I would get another and use this one as spare parts. Fuels that can explode need special attention to handling and equipment. But, I have been über-careful since a guy I knew "succeded" in pouring a bottle of meths onto a live campfire... Edit: Welcome to CCS
Hello Chris A diagnosis by picture is not serious. I had a look at my Juwel, similar model. The bottom part is inserted very deeply into the upper part and the soldered zone is rather wide. You could maybe see the inner side of the faulty zone if you look through the filler. Is there solder visible? Can you show us a picture of the bottom (outside)? I don't think the fault is dangerous, but of course it would be good for you to find somebody who can take the stove in his hands to see the problem. Is there no technical university in Warsaw where you can find somebody to ask? Best Regards Radler
If you can get or make a fitting to attach a bicycle pump to either the fuel filler or at the jet, you could pump a moderate amount of pressure into the tank, and them submerge it in a bucket of water and look for bubbles. Be careful not to over-pressurize! Welcome to CCS. ....Arch
If it was mine, I'd take it out back, fuel it up, put it on the concrete driveway and light it. My bet is that it works just fine.
If - checking leaks with growing pressure solve problem: - in home kitchen prepare 2 - 3 kg sands in deep pot to 80 Celsius temperature - fill the tank with denaturat - (coloured spiritus) - check weight filled stove - close valve - with alloy foil secure SRV area - if SRV will be realised - in outdoor - bury stove in hot sand - let them cool ------------------- - check weight cooled stove - leaks leave marks on the tank -------------------- easy and slow
Janders, The boy who got burnt , was the incerdent on the South Coast NSW after Christmas ? If so it happened the night before we got there. In this case the one with bad burns was a bystander, as I understand it the one who put the metho on the fire was not burnt. The boy was taken by ambulance to Bega Hospital then heleycoptered to a Sydney burns unit. This was a bad thing caused by lack of understanding such a tragedy , the camping party was just red P plaiters with no adult supervision. As I understand it they came from Sydney. I was told other campers guided the ambulance in, wile others hept cold running water on the burns, another boy was burnt too but not badley. The one burnt badley was in great pain. This is a good lesson to all on the dangers of fuel, you have to be so carefull. Cheers Rob
@Robert Bruce No, this incident happened at a scoutcamp way out in the backwoods in the late '70s. Simple case of mixing kerosene and meths bottles. Luckily it had been bad weather, so his semi-wet, heavy cotton military clothing took the major blow. Bad burns to his face, lost 2 fingers and got serious burns on his right arm where the meths got under his clothing when the plastic bottle exploded. I don't even want to think about how it would have ended with the current hi-tech, highly flammable clothing.
Thanks Janders, this seemed the same, it looks like young people will just not learn, consequently someone pays a very high price for stupidity and lack of knowledge. Dangers like this and others should be taught in school especially when parents don't . Cheers Rob
@Kryzsioolek The tank appears to have not been crimped or edge rolled. It looks to be the upper part slid over the base and soldered with some metal containing flux paste. You can possibly separate the tank from the base and after cleaning down to the base metal use a 45% silver brazing rod and you will be just fine to light it up. I use a map gas torch for this type work. You Tube is full of Tutorials on Brazing.

I've got some update on what's been going on with the stove: - I gave the tank to a welder and he did a pretty good job with putting a strip of weld over the questionable area (with some safety margin) - It turned out that the thread on the burner is in miserable condition I guess there is little I can do about it... Anyway I took it to a trip to Tatras and used for 3 days, thrashed it around a snow cave. It performed perfectly :-). However a small malfunction occurred: seal near the regulatory valve started to leak and I had a tiny flame burning on the side of the stove. Back home I replaced it with the first thing that occured to me: kevlar thread from some paracord. Works fine for now but needs more testing. Here comes the fun part: I was really sad about proposition of using the stove for spares (30$ after all... and probably more time spend online on hunting for aother stove)... It all changed after I went to one flea market in Warsaw and got a perfect but a little rusty new Juwel 34 for amazing 2$ :-D I got my hands on it and grabbed sandpaper Here are the pics: Anyway it looks like stove adventure begins. I already have two Juwels and recently dad mentioned his old russian copy of a primus "Hunter" that needs some fettling : D
