Did you stovies ever see the following from Cascade Designs: http://www.cascadedesigns.com/msr/blog/evolution-msr-xgk-ex-stove/ sam
Thanks for link Sam, Yes I have as I expect many others have also seen it, source is MSR/Cascade site. It's a good read, I've quoted from the article during recent MF/DF discussions. thx again
Definitely a good high level history of the XGK, thanks for a nice read. I wish they'd publish something outlining the many models and pumps in between the 9 and today's version.
I was at the CD headquarters last year. They have a display, incomplete, with nearly all of what they have made. I think they would like to receive information about their history as much as they may have some to share.
It was a good overview. Some of the dates they gave for the G and GK were interesting as I thought they came a year earlier than they published. I wasn't aware that the GK could burn diesel, leaded, and unleaded fuel, not that I would normally but in a pinch I would. Here's the MSR Timeline page with lots of good info on many of their products with stoves throughout: http://www.cascadedesigns.com/msr/timeline
Well ALL RIGHT SAM !!!! what size do you wear, we need to know for the Hero hat!! "Building on its successful Model 9 stove, MSR released a series of next-generation burners, starting in 1975 with the Model 9 MF stove, that could burn kerosene, in addition to white gas and stove and lantern fuel. In 1977, the Model 9 DF stove was delivered, offering even greater innovative engineering and increased heating efficiency for better backcountry performance." On behalf of myself and fellow confused stovies among us THANK YOU for best tidbit I've seen to-date re MF/DF we'll have to digest this info as it relates to dates, the chart etc and incorporate it. sincerely omc
all, Thanks again Sam, Many years of separate MSR XGK links (& verbose posts) with conflicts are frustrating and have lead me to this: I've carefully researched and collated XGK timejivesline details from EIGHT MSR (CascadeDesign) sources. Two of the sources are your links above. It spans 32+ years (not an easy read), and is the only list I'm aware of combining multiple MSR sources (with links). All the info is MSR sourced and most of it jives but there are exceptions (some conflicted XGK details remains). A sequence does emerge that is in-line with (supportive of) many recent XGK posts. If fellow stovies find this one initial list useful, then "let this be your guide". It's not perfect and details CAN carefully be improved upon. Info is sourced from *2006, **2014, ***2014 more source detail below. Hi OMC! Very nice timeline. I'm sure that took a lot of fun reading to figure out what started where and what ended when. Very nicely done. I'll have to read through all the source material to go through that same adventure. My short term memory isn't what it was a few years ago so it will be like discovering it for the first time. One to Ken's post.... Thanks for such a nice post! sam
OLD THREAD Sam, A tag to credit and thank you again makes sense but I don't want to interrupt what you may have going on. You've been busy elsewhere as of late and it's all good. Sam has provided many answers thru the years and is much appreciated. He has provided us two informative MSR links above. Today, both links get to the site but in Cascade Design's funny way, tells us we're lost: So it just so happens neither link works but are a reminder that this post relies on links to other sites. I'm taking liberty of posting the full content of the 1st link now. Credit to the source: Cascade Design's MSR Team (MSR Summit), July 2, 2014 and has been openly published online. "Affectionately compared to a jet engine by many, this stove and its predecessors, starting with the Model 9, set the standard for safety and reliability, which is why it is often called the “world’s most reliable extreme-conditions stove.” Go to any base camp on any high mountain in the world, and you’re likely to see many XGKs." end thx omc view count 800
Failed link(s), from above, sources for timeline: "*** 2014 CascadeDesign website title *"OUR STORY; 45 Years in the making", released for 2014, MSR's 45th year. The article was taken down / can't be found. IF anyone can find this or the one below, archiving those would be a plus (w/the numerous mistakes). ------------------ For different, yet very similar 2015 article (may have incl. stove details updated/corrected but, it now also fails), from www.cascadedesigns.com gets MSR logo ("For 45 years..." still, in Sep 2021) clk MSR gets www.msrgear.com home > blog (articles by date) > ... to > 45 YEARS OF REDEFINING OUTDOOR GEAR DESIGN JUN 7, 2015 > ... sadly "Click the image..." for all images gets "Not Found, error 404" same result for link at the bottom of page. That page includes: In 1960s Larry Pentberthy, an engineer and mountaineer from Seattle, had become fiercely frustrated with climbing equipment that was far too often under-tested and overrated. Decades in the mountains had taught him that one’s survival and achievement in the backcountry called for a trust and reliance on gear. Uncompromising, opinionated, and sometimes controversial, Larry dedicated himself on a personal crusade to making the backcountry safer for mountain travelers. Larry began by independently testing climbing equipment of the day, first under a committee of The Mountaineers, then on his own. To publish his findings, he started the Mountain Safety Research newsletter in 1969. Larry evaluated everything from stove fuels to the elongation of ropes, the holding power of pitons, the strength of ice axes, and many other important but generally neglected issues. Through the newsletters, readers also got a healthy dose of Larry’s own research on topics important climbers, like the correlation between dehydration and Acute Mountain Sickness. To support his volunteer efforts, Larry sold third-party products through the newsletters as well as new, innovative gear that he engineered and built under the MSR label. As time went on, MSR began to manufacture and sell more of Larry’s own inventive, dependable and high-quality designs. Many iconic outdoor pieces stemmed from this time period, some of them revolutionary, forever changing the way people traveled through the mountains. *Our new online museum takes you on a journey back to MSR’s origins, and up through the four decades of innovations and ingenuity that helped redefine outdoor gear design. <Journey back into MSR’s past> ...[*failed link]. NOTE: if member were to notice "MSR online museum" were to get back online, please post in this thread to let it be known, thanks.
FYI, related XGK article, credit to the source: Cascade Design's MSR Team (MSR Summit Register Blog), openly published online Aug 2019, copied today. www.msrgear.com home > blog (articles by date) > ... > HOW MSR’S EARLY RESEARCH ON CLIMBER HYDRATION SPARKED A REVOLUTION AUG 20, 2019 not to, at all, take away from a wonderful topic & article overall , stovies can note at the end, the above MSR newsletter issue 7 April 1973 includes testing results for hiker/expedition stoves from Off Belay magazine December 1972 issue (archival details otherwise not easy to find). thx
bump, re my: "NOTE: if member were to notice "MSR online museum" were to get back online, please post in this thread to let it be known, thanks." caveat: researching Co-op to> MSR (to> REI to> Cascade) reveals historic accuracy/details were lost, the result is a void of archived details. Good intension best efforts at refilling that void might be lacking in some respects (sources inside and outside the company). There is now a, working, interactive page, credit Cascade Design's MSRgear.com to-date (i will archive camp stove items while it is on the site and working): 1800 views
