I was wondering if anybody that owns one of these could comment. I recently bought one of these units. It's the latest primus based unit. I've run in on both coleman fuel and gas. It runs good with either giving good blue flames except for running on gas if I turn it up too high, in which there is yellow in the flame. This might be since it uses a .32 jet. However, yesterday I was running it on coleman fuel and was kind of dissapointed. It seems to run fine, with a nice blue flame, but as soon as I put the trangia pot on (this is a T25 by the way) the flames immediately turn very yellow, depositing black soot on the bottom of the pot. This seems to happen more when the burner is turned up. If I throttle it back somewhat it's fine. Would this be normal operation for this burner, or might there be an issue with mine? Thanks!
A couple of things for you to think about: Is there enough clearance between the top of the burner and the bottom of the pot? Has the jet opened out so that it's much bigger than 0.32 mm? Were you outdoors with the lower windshield holes facing into or away from the wind? Regards John
Hi John, 1. The X2 burner is designed for use in the trangia cookset, I'm using it in a trangia 25, with the pot on the pot supports. So I would assume there is enough clearance because I'm using the set as it was designed. 2. The jet is brand new so should not be bigger than 0.32. A visual inspection shows everything to be normal. 3. I was indoors so it would be the same as using the set outdoors in a no wind situation.
Hi dgold, A yellow flame means it's running rich one way or another. Too much fuel, not enough air or not mixing properly. Not saying that yours has but i have to be very careful that my butane powered burner is clipped in properly in my T27 otherwise it tries to ping loose and the fuel line pushes it up. Reducing the volume of the mixing zone. If the jet is correct that leaves not enough air. Try it outdoors facing into a breeze. The breeze will force extra air through the base and up near the burner. Regards John
Maybe no help at all ...... but is the burner resting all the way down, properly, in the cup? I ask because you say it goes yellow when you add the pot. That is more like what John said, the flame height to the pot. If the pot height is correct, then maybe the burner is too high. Pictures are welcome here. We love pictures of flames and stoves.
Yes, I inserted the burner into the trangia unit until it "snapped" in place, and the burner mount sits flush with the trangia stove lower windshield. It kind of puzzles me because I've mounted a nova burner in there, and also used the trangia gas burner, and they don't exhibit such finicky behavior. As for the pot height, I can't see how that is a problem, as the distance from the top of the burner to the pot supports on a trangia is actually more than the distance from the top of the burner to the pot supports on a nova, primus omnifuel, msr whisperlite, etc. I would expect this kind of behavior from a cobbled up home made modification but this is the trangia/primus designed official stove designed for the trangia set.
So I did a little bit of experimentation this morning. I swapped out the jet with the one from my omnilite, same .32 size just to verify there was not an issue with the jet. Same poor performance. flames are only blue if throttle is turned way down. If I open it half a turn there are yellow flames. Also got pretty poor performance with gas canister. It only works ok with the throttle cracked open to maybe 1/8 to 1/4 turn. It pretty much is acting as if the flow of fuel is way too high. Then I put the kerosene .28 yet in (I'm using coleman fuel) and it runs much better, in fact it runs more or less how I would expect it to run. I can open up the throttle and there are no yellow flames, even when I put the pot on. I think everyone is correct in that it seems to be running too rich. But why? I even placed a small fan to blow air into the ventilation holes and that had no effect. I'm thinking there might be something wrong with this unit. Would there maybe be some kind of adjustment to the stove that can be made? It looks like this stove was modified by primus based off some other stove to remove the flame adjustment that is at the burner. Instead it is capped off. But I wonder if I remove the nut that is there there is some kind of adjustment that can be made to throttle back the flow of fuel?
I noticed the same. I keep the smallest gauge jet in place, even for white gas and it runs better. The X2 is designed to run at a much lower 2k watts or about 6,825 btu to match better with the Trangia stove which runs at a theoretical 7k btu, to avoid burning the pot. I don't know if that's related, but tyere is definitely some problem there. Airflow from the holes in the lower walls seems to have an effect too, so maybe that's it. When there's a breeze, i aim the side with more holes towards the oncoming wind. Can't be sure, but i "feel" like i have fewer problems when i do this. Could be wrong
Hi to you all, Wonder if you can help with this query please? I have recently bought a Trangia X2 multi fuel burner - no problem, so far. I have read that simmering is a bit of an issue with this burner. I noticed that the basic components are of Primus manufacture as is / was the Omnifuel. Do you know if I was to buy the threaded spindle c/w handle for the Omnifuel 3289, would it it fit into the Trangia X2? I disconnected the fuel line from the Trangia and noticed there was not a filter as per the exploded view for the Ominfuel. It might be that the Trangia is not threaded on the inside to receive the Omnifuel spindle - the Trangia has 2 or 3 "flutes" running down to the tapered end of the spindle. Apologies if this thread has been posted before, but I've been searching for an answer and just happened across your forum. I realise that there might be a technical reason for not having a simmering control vale, but that eludes me. I think perhaps it might be based on costs? I would prefer to have that secondary control if possible, but no big shakes if I can't. Thanks in anticipation for your help Regards Ian
Edit:- I have "investigated" the inside of the connection where the spindle fits and can feel the serration of the threads where the original control screwed in. Therefore, my curiosity is now centred around "Why shouldn't I fit an Omnfuel control spindle?" (part no 732900 - I believe) and not "Is it physically possible to fit an Omnifuel control spindle?" I think that Trangia X2 is based on Primus Multifuel: http://www.primus.eu/multifuel That is not having control spindle. If Primus Multifuel is physically same as Omnifuel without control spindle then there is one interesting question. Do they leave Multifuel without threads that are on the tip of Omnifuel's control spindle. Due to mass production principles it would be cheaper to make all stove bodies so that they are having threads for control spindle but leave the control spindle out from cheaper model (Multifuel). But if I look pictures on Primus web site it looks that Multifuel has shorter tube that connect fuel hose to the stove body than in Omnifuel. So maybe even if threads for the control spindle are there Omnifuel's control spindle would be too long for Multifuel and Trangia X2. To get better answer for the question Multifuel/Trangia X2 would need to be placed side by side with Omnifuel for comparison.
This question has come up here before on this site and as Afterburner has pointed out the tube on the Multi-Fuel is in fact shorter and as I've discovered it is in fact threaded, but the Omni-Fuel spindle is too long to fit, I had a spare. I have had both stoves for a few years and my Multi-Fuel currently sits unused. I not sure why Primus made the Multi-Fuel the way they did. It originally sold for slightly less money than the slightly more powerful Omni-Fuel, but not enough less to make up for the loss of versatility. I only have one because I got it cheap off of ebay.
Maybe they sell Multifuel because it's simpler and should be more reliable f.ex. for expedition use since there is no control spindle. Control spindle can get clogged and there are few seals that could leak.
Hi Ian, No, you can not fit a control valve on the x2 burner. The pipe is too short and there are no threads for the spindle. I did actually think I could "feel" the internal threads - contrary to what was written above - but will concede to manufacturers knowledge. What I was not aware of was the supply pipe is shorter on the X2 than the Omnifuel, so, that makes it a non starter for my conversion. My apologies to you all if this has been covered in earlier threads, - is there a pun there? - but my curiosity for getting things just right - even if it means being a ball ache - gets the better of me. I am happy and satisfied with my X2 but would have liked that extra degree of control for simmering, if at all possible. Thanks for all your replies - appreciated. Ian
Ian, no worries! Many topics are having multiple threads here... If there are threads in side of Multifuel burner then it's possible to make it adjustable. Just shorten Omnifuel's control spindle and fit it into Multifuel. One problem might be the heat that is conducted via short feed tube. O-rings might get too hot and they might melt. There is a work around for that: Make graphite packing for the control spindle. If you make graphite packing for the control spindle maybe it is not necessary to shorten the control spindle because graphite packing nuts would come a bit out from position where Mutifuel has a blanking nut on the end of feed tube.
I had the same problem with mine. I discovered that I need to run it at FULL blast (25-30 pumps on full bottle, valve full open) for about a minute (maybe a little less) to get the flame spreader properly hot. This eliminates the problem with soot build-up when using the 0.32 mm jet. I would normally only pump 7 to 10 times, but it turns out the underpumping prevents the stove and flame spreader from getting hot enough. This in turn causes unburnt fuel in the exhaust, and this fuel starts burning when to pot is lowered, which causes the yellow flames. Edit: I tried running gasoline on the 0.28 mm jet. It runs ok for a while, but then the smaller jet causes excessive pressure and a small yellow flame next to the flame nipple, so I wont do that again.
IMHO the only good thing with the Trangia X2 is the mounting cup, the rest is r_bb__h... But the cup can actually be put to good use - when fitting an Optimus Polaris into it!
With Nordic Countries co-operation we got @radioactive_man 's problem sorted... Just remove Trangia X2 burner from the mounting cup and get Optimus Polaris as @Odd recommends. Mount Optimus Polaris burner to mounting cup. Tranxia X2 burner, rest of the parts & fuel bottle you can dispose to me and I will take care to recycle them.
If I were to mount anything else, I would take my Omnilite Ti and put it in the Trangia cup. But now that I got the X2 running properly, nobody can have it Odd, care to elaborate on, why you think the X2 is a piece of crap?
