I'm planning on using a MSR XGK on a daily basis for a bit of the summer and am wanting a smaller fuel bottle for it as I'll only need a few ounces of fuel each time. I'm wondering about a small fuel bottle for it, and happened across these 350 ml aluminum wineflask shaped ones on ebay: Before I rush out and blow my $4 on paypal, just thought I'd check to see if this is a good idea, bad idea for some reason, or no idea and I might as well be the first sucker to try. ........ OK, I just had a brainstorm and went to the cabinet that holds the myriad water bottles and go cups, and no the threads are not the same so just answered my own question, so does anyone have a good lead on a tiny-ish fuel bottle? Thanks! FB
Hi, As luck would have it, there's an 11 oz/325ml MSR bottle right here in the pile of goodies next to the desk. Approx dimensions, without cap, are 155mm (6 1/8") high and 63mm (2 1/2") diameter. The old style cap adds about 30mm (1 3/16") to the height. Sorry, I don't have one of the newer child resistant caps to measure. Rick C
forget all the beverage bottles all brands all origins. First if its marked in any way beverage then sooner or later one of two things will happen. The good one of the two is your stove wont light. second beverage bottles are coated internally to withstand acids in juices but not solvents in fuels Third they are not pressure vessels Bulin sell fuel bottles as do a few other manufacturers but be cautious. I have a couple and one of them seems fine the other the MSR stopper will screw into the chines bottle but the chinese stopper will not screw into the msr bottle. I have found the same on older sigg bottles as well compared to a durasal pump. Then just to complicate things completely The durasal pump has a lip on the seal that only properly fits MSR bottles. You can trim the lip off but do you want to?
As mentioned on these posts there is a proper and bottle that is made for fuel use : So just forget those Chinese made water bottles that are not made for the fuel use! You can de-child proof that child proof cap on MSR bottles if you don't like it: https://classiccampstoves.com/threads/de-child-proofing-the-child-proof-fuel-bottle-cap.27967/ or just use 'an expedition cap' that MSR sells separately: Those MSR bottles as superb quality bottles and they will last for ever!
just had a look at the pic of the water bottles shown above. They are not cylinders so will not stand any pressure.
I was looking at the oval(ish) shape and thinking you'd have to be lucky that when you screwed the pump in it aligned so that the fuel tube was at the bottom when the bottle was laying on its flatter side. But I think @geeves has a far more compelling reason not to try them. Regards John
I also vote for the 11 oz MSR bottle. That is about as small as you can go and still know it is going to work with your stove. Prices can be all over the place on these, so shop around as much as possible.
I've never used the Chinese bottles for petroleum fuel, but I've had several I've used for water and also for alcohol for my Trangia burner. Don't walk away -- RUN! 3 out of 5 of these I've purchased leak like a sieve! The other 2 just ooze a bit. Naptha or Coleman fuel is not something you want to play around with. When I worked on the Appalachian Trail, one of the most wrenching rescues I was involved in had to do with a stove explosion. Don't take the risk. 35 years later, I still occasionally wake up with cold sweats because of it.
