The 14th CCS/CPL Annual UK Gathering - Newark

3-5 June 2016

You are welcome to join us for the annual gathering at Smeatons Lakes, Newark, Nottinghamshire.

Collectors of stoves, pressure lamps & blowlamps are all welcome. Please bring along some of your collection for display! It is also a great opportunity for swaps & trading with other collectors!

Originally a weekend event, many people now arrive early. The field is booked from the Wednesday at our special rate. Please come along even if it's for the Saturday night.
No need to book but if possible drop me a PT to let me know you're coming so I have a rough idea of numbers.

Cost is £6.50 per night per tent, caravan or campervan. Extra tents & gazebo's housing displays are free.

More info: DO NOT BOOK IN at reception. Please just pop in to reception & tell them you are attending the Classic Camp Stove's rally or the 'lamp & stove rally' & they will likely point you in the right direction. I will collect the pitch fees during the event.

A key-card for the main gate barrier is available for a £5 deposit. If you are arriving after 6pm please park up & walk around to the rally field & borrow someone's card to gain access. If the warden is still about & sees you she may let you in herself but please don't disturb her otherwise. Alternatively, from Thursday give me a ring on the mobile & I will let you in. Email me for tel. number. There is a height restriction barrier which is closed around 8pm, preventing high vans or caravans entering or leaving the site. If it is closed you will need to park up until the following morning. It may be possible to come to some arrangement with the warden so if this is an issue give the site a ring. Normal vehicles are not affected.

The normal rate for the site is £15-17 per night for 2 people with a car. Our discount rally rate of £6.50 per night per tent, caravan or campervan does not include use of the main toilet & shower block. We do have access to the basic mens & womens 'Anglers Toilet' on the site which is just toilet & sink. If you wish to use the showers in the main block by reception there is a fee to pay (£1 I think). The shower block uses a numerical key entry system. In the past some people have paid their fee & passed the number around. This has upset the site manager & as a result you may find they open the door for you rather than giving you the code. If we are trusted again this year please respect the system & pay the fee otherwise it may be difficult to secure the venue or goodwill in future years.

We are also asked to keep dogs on leads & not allow them to foul the rally field - obviously accidents do happen in which case you are respectfully asked to clean up after your dog. The site provide a dog walk area.

There is fishing available on site but it needs to be booked in advance.

There are no hookups on the rally field

I will be attending, this time with a bigger tent!

 

Can't make it sadly, returning from my annual (but this time an 8-night) Orcadian Excursion, including the Folk Music Festival, on the 31st beforehand.

I will make it down on at least one occasion though, the Ambucamper should manage an 1100 mile round trip (at an average 50mph), an ambition of mine.

I am planning to come over for the weekend (probably friday) but it's a bit difficult to plan things at work nowadays. I do have a question about the Dartford crossing. Last year works were underway to change the pay system (payment in advance, numberplate recognition). What about us bl°°dy foreigners? Do we still pay, and how?

Hey Wim..
You pay the toll on line by the end of the day that you use it. Doesn't have to be prepaid but you can do it that way too. Go to www.gov.uk and search for Dart Charge. You can pay cash at "payzone outlets"
They were running a kind of amnesty a while back and letting you pay just the toll within a week of being reminded by post (don't ask how I know ) but I doubt that will last too much longer. Don't rely on remembering what the sign says at the crossing it's too flipping small to read when you're worrying what the idiot in their Chelsea tractor weaving lanes in front of you will do next .

Wim, @Wim if your worried, perhaps I can add your vehicle details to my 'Dart Charge' account, I've added/removed a few vehicles since the system has started ! might put your mind at rest ? Let me know if you'd sooner this than sort it yourself ok

Sarah retired from the Navy and we've aquired a dog. Several members have met Sarah before, possibly most memorable being Seattle for the delivery of Marmite.

Sarah was'nt especially impressed when her Tilley iron arrived yesterday.

 

Once again, I won't be there to meet you... But one day, it will arrive !

 

I'll be thinking of you at the meet. I cannot get there this year.

I am currently waiting for medical permission to start driving again.

However it appears that my ill health has been caught by my camper van. Despite solar panel chargers the battery is discharging when on the van. It discharges little when off the van but takes a nose dive when on it. There is a parasite circuit. I had an idea to stop it but cannot get down to check whether it has worked. If it has not worked it will have to be looked at by an auto electrician to identify the guilty circuit

I had a battery on a car that kept discharging.
Once the car was started the battery started charging and everything was OK.
But after parking for the night the battery would be flat again in the morning.
I bought a new battery, but the same thing happened to that.

After some thought I decided that something was drawing power even when the car was switched off.
In the end I found the fault and it was very simple.
The boot of the car had a light that came on when the boot was opened, even if the car was switched off.
It was an old car with a simple mechanism that pushed a switch when the boot was closed and so switched off the light.
The small metal bracket that held the switch had bent and so closing the boot never switched off the light.
I bent the bracket back into shape and the problem was cured.
A case of, 'Does the light go off when you close the fridge door?'

I think the problem is in the van courtesy light circuit. The van has 2 batteries. The normal one for a van which is where the fault is. A leisure battery which supplies the lights and electrical circuits in the living area

They cut a whacking great hole through the roof and the wiring for the courtesy light circuit goes through the box section around the perimeter. Unfortunately that box section gets drilled and self tapping screws get put into it for the curtain rails and some press studs. There is a chance the drilling hits a wire or the self tapping screws that stick up chaif through the insulation of the permanently live wire of the circuit light circuit which could cause a slight short circuit. There is a switch on the the front courtesy light which I have switched off so in theory, the latter part of the circuit now has no live wires. However if the short is before the switch or in another circuit then it is going to need an auto electrician to go through all of the circuits until he finds the faulty one.

Apart from that if the battery has flattened I will be stuck in the compound unless the attached garage has an auto electrician and the ability to start a van with a completely flat battery. I have tried jump starting it from another vehicle and even with the engine of that vehicle on high revs there was not enough power to start the engine

Previously I have removed and recharged the battery but now lifting the battery out could cause a heart attack. Even with a healthy heart it is a pig of a job as the battery is at chest height in a very confined space and needs twisting around to get it into or out of position

Life can be tedious!
