Hello, I'm trying to figure out if the svea 123 (non-R, sloping valve, non self-cleaning) valve had a metal ring behind the graphite packing like the 123R does, or if the packing just goes straight into the valve. I'm hoping for the latter, because if not, I need to find a new ring to back the packing and have no idea where to find one. any and all info on this one would be most welcome. thanks,
I believe this is the correct link https://classiccampstoves.com/threads/1961-sievert-catalogue-no-269.10632/ Edit: Or even better https://classiccampstoves.com/threa...cking-replacement-question.31203/#post-338225
@acr I checked mine this morning and it looked just like the photo in the link above, which I've copied here. So: no washer present in the original SVEA 123. Reproduced photo from @Milam:
Excelent @Tony Press thanks. In looking at your post, you were saying that you couldn't get the graphite out, which would have meant that the metalring would be in there as well. But if you didn't have one at all, I'm relieved I don't need to go hunting down, what would probably end up being a tricky thing to find. thanks,
Hi ACR. The spindle on the 123 is of a constant diameter, and fits through a constant diameter hole. Therefore, the packing can compress tightly around the spindle and go nowhere else. With the 123R, there is a cogged rack on the spindle to operate the cleaning needle and it is wider than the spindle shaft. Therefore, it needs a hole to pass through which is wider than the spindle shaft. Without the metal ring, the packing, as well as compressing itself around the spindle shaft, would be forced into the wider hole and interfere with the rack. The ring is there on the 123R to prevent this and keep the packing where it belongs. Hope that makes sense. Terry
The Optimus 324 had one, too. I made one, as it was missing, the first part I made on my rebuilt lathe.
@acr I did eventually replace the packing. When I took it apart this morning the packing came out with the spindle, and I checked for a washer in case there was one, but no. Cheers Tony
You guys made my day. Thanks for the help. @Trojandog , thanks for your explanation. It is great to get the answer I need, it is better to know why. Thanks for taking the time to spell it out for me.
